May 10, 2018
DOWNERS GROVE, IL - The Downers Grove South Mustangs hosted the third game of a three-game series against West Suburban Gold rival Hinsdale Central Thursday afternoon. The Hornets of Hinsdale South had the 2-0 advantage on the year against the conference foe, but the Mustangs, backed by a strong seven inning, one-hit performance by Cameron Crowley (Trinity College commit), topped the Hornets 3-1 in a quick paced, hour and a half matchup.
Downers Grove South plated three runs in fourth inning starting with a leadoff infield single by senior Jordan Knoch. Keegan Garland walked then Jake Pileggi drove an RBI double down the left field line scoring Knoch and sending Garland to third. Pinch hitter Blair Thibault grounded an RBI out to the second baseman and Anthony Stellato drove an RBI single to the opposite field, making the score 3-1. Stellato finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Mustangs catcher Brett Riegler (University of Chicago commit) had a productive day at the plate reaching base each time going 2-for-2 with a double and hit by pitch. The senior back stop showed vocal leadership for the Mustangs the entire game.
Hinsdale South scratched their lone run early in the first inning when Frankie Klemm reached first base by virtue of a defensive miscommunication by the Mustangs on an infield pop-up. Two batters later DH Paris Lewis flared a single to the opposite field, scoring Klemm.
Crowley kept hitters honest all game with a quick pace and a three pitch mix all with feel for the zone. The senior right-hander allowed one hit, one walk, and struck out seven.
Hinsdale South starter Matt Uba (Concordia University-Chicago commit) threw the ball well, but took the loss with a line: 4IP, 7H, 3R, 3ER, BB, 2K. Evan Zenger threw two scoreless innings in relief of Uba facing the minimum amount of hitters.
