No. 14 Mount Carmel over No. 15 Providence
April 23, 2018
No. 14 Mount Carmel - 8
No. 15 Providence - 2
NEW LENOX, IL - The only question mark on Mount Carmel (12-7) going into the 2018 season was if they would be able to put together enough pitching to be one of the top contenders in the state. The offensive firepower and defensive prowess is second to none, and if Coach Hurry can get more starts like the one senior Anthony Scanlon posted on Monday, the Caravan could be rolling in the second half of the season.
Scanlon went the distance holding No. 15 Providence to just five hits and two runs while striking out five. Celtic’s leadoff hitter Alex Helmin was the only one to figure out Scanlon and accounted for essentially all of the Celtic offense. Helmin hit a solo homer in the first and led off the sixth with a sharp single to center followed by two stolen bases, putting him in position to score on an error in left field.
The Mount Carmel offense did its part providing Scanlon support before he even took the mound with two runs in the first. Alek Thomas scored on an Anthony Herron RBI groundout and Jake Kapers singled home Christian Lucio to give the Caravan an early 2-0 lead.
Mount Carmel put up another two spot in the fourth when Malik Peters doubled in a pair of runs with a gapper to right center.
The Caravan’s final tallies came in the seventh with four insurance runs highlighted by another Jake Kapers RBI single and a two-run single by Ed Howard passed a drawn in infield.
With the win, No. 14 Mount Carmel improves to 12-7, while the 15th ranked Celtics fall to 9-7.
