MCYSA International Showcase: Pitcher Analysis

The MCYSA International Showcase took place on Tuesday July 28th at Lippold Park in Crystal Lake, IL. Today we end the analysis with the pitchers.

Despite his small frame 2019 RHP Grant Leader impressed on the mound running his fastball up to 85 mph and showing a feel for three off speed pitchers as well.

Top Prospects

1. Grant Leader, RHP/C, Lyons Township, 2019
5-foot-7, 130-pound, right-handed hitting RHP/C with a small, athletic frame. Showed advance velocity and feel for size and age. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a short, quick arm action. Tall and fall, online delivery with a short leg lift. Smooth rhythm with level shoulders. Fastball sat 83-85 mph. Curveball has 11-5 shape with short, late break at 66-68 mph. Maintained armspeed on changeup with fade at 68-70 mph. Featured a cutter that showed slider action with late, biting action at 70-72 mph. One of the top arms to watch in Illinois in the coming years. Defensively has a short arm action from a high ¾ arm slot. Tall receiver behind the plate in drills with flexibility in the lower half. Popped 2.18-2.26 and threw 73 mph from the crouch. At the plate hits from a balanced setup, short toe tap stride. Line drive hitter with a short, level swing path. 79 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.08.

2. Colton Hutt, RHP, Washington Community, 2017
5-foot-11, 160-pound, right-handed pitcher with a lanky frame. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a long arm action and slight wrap in the back. Tall and fall delivery with slight crossfire action and easy effort. Heavy fastball down in the zone at 80-81 topping out at 82 mph. Curveball showed 11-5 shape with tight rotation for strikes at 69-72 mph. Maintained armspeed on changeup that flashed cut at 69-72 mph. Will continue to add velo with a stronger front side.

3. Evan Waddell, RHP, Belvidere North, 2018
6-foot-3, 170-pound, right-handed pitcher with a lanky, projectable frame. On the mound works from an over the top arm angle with a short, quick arm action. Up tempo delivery with a short leg lift to balance point. Online delivery with a square landing and athletic finish. Threw fastball for strikes that showed slight run at 79-82 topping out at 84 mph. Curveball showed 11-5 shape with gradual action at 63-65 mph. Showed some feel for a changeup that showed armside run at 65-67 mph.

4. Rich Campbell, RHP/OF, Loyola, 2017
6-foot-1, 165-pound, right-handed hitting RHP/OF with an athletic frame. On the mound works from a ¾ arm angle with a long quick arm action. Online delivery with a slightly closed landing and an upright finish. Fastball showed heavy running action at 81-84 mph. Slowed arm on curveball with 11-5 shape at 65-69 mph. Changeup showed armside run at 73-76 mph. Slider was best breaking ball at 70-71 mph. Defensively has a long arm action from a ¾ arm slot. Carry on throws with some accuracy. Plays thru the ball with a long transfer and fluid footwork. Threw 83 mph from the outfield. Offensively hits from a balanced setup with a short load and long stride. Pull hitter with an uphill swing path and fluid rhythm. 78 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.11.

5. Brandon Kendall, RHP, Bartlett, 2017
6-foot-3, 182-pound, right-handed pitcher. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a short, quick arm action. Tall at balance point with some effort in the delivery. Tall and fall delivery with a slight crossfire action and a closed landing. Fastball showed run at 80-83 mph. Curveball showed slider action at 66-68 mph for strikes. Showed feel for changeup and maintained armspeed at 73-75 mph.

Danny Borgstrom, SS/RHP, Morris, 2018
5-foot-9, 145-pound, left-handed hitting SS/RHP with an athletic frame. Defensively has a short arm action from a high ¾ arm slot. Accurate throws with carry. Soft, sure hands with quick fluid footwork. Athletic fielder, plays thru the ball. Threw 79 mph across the infield. At the plate hits from a balanced, slightly open stance with a smooth load and short stride. Line drive hitter with good balance and rhythm. Short path, with pull tendencies. 79 mph exit velocity from a tee. Rant he 60 at 7.33. On the mound works from a ¾ arm angle with a short arm action. Tall and fall online delivery, gets extension on his front side. From the stretch uses a slide step. Fastball sat 78-80 topping out at 81 mph showing slight cutting action. Curveball showed sweeping action at 69-70 mph. Maintained armspeed on changeup at 70-72 mph.

Cory Busse, RHP/SS, Woodstock North, 2017
6-foot-3, 160-pound, RHP/SS with a lanky frame. On the mound works from an over the top arm angle with a short arm action. Tall and fall online delivery with some rhythm and a square landing. Threw fastball for strikes at 77-79 mph. Curveball showed 12-6 shape with gradual action at 61-63 mph. Showed good feel for changeup that flashed armside run at 70-73 mph. Defensively has a loose arm action from a ¾ arm slot. Carry on throws with some accuracy. Plays thru the ball with a quick, clean exchange. Threw 75 mph across the infield. Offensively hits from a tall setup with a slight leg kick stride. Long swing path. 75 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 6.97.

Eric Garcia, C/RHP, Andrew, 2017
6-foot-2, 192-pound, right-handed hitting C/RHP. Offensively hits from a tall, balanced setup with short load, and linear stride. Short, uphill swing path. 81 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.70. Defensively has a short arm action from an over the top arm slot. Uphill online throws to second. Popped 2.18-2.28 and threw 68 mph from the crouch. On the mound works from an over the top arm angle with a long arm action. High leg kick to balance point. Tall and fall delivery with crossfire action. Fastball sat 69-73 topping out at 75 mph. Curveball showed 12-6 shape with gradual action at 63-64 mph. Maintained arm speed on changeup that flashed fade at 65-66 mph.

Garrett Gillund, C/RHP, McHenry West, 2018
5-foot-10, 160-pound, right-handed hitting C/RHP. Offensively hits from a wide, balanced setup with short hand load to the backside. Inside out swing path with average balance. 75 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 8.24. Defensively has a short arm action from an over the top arm slot. Popped 2.31-2.47 and threw 66 mph from the crouch. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a long arm action. Tall and fall online delivery with a square landing. Fastball flashed run at 69-70 topping out at 71 mph. Cruveball showed 11-5 shape with loose rotation and gradual action at 60-61 mph. Changeup sat 62-64 mph.

Evan Pilat, RHP, Huntley, 2018
5-foot-11, 205-pound, right-handed pitcher. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a short arm action. Tall and fall online delivery with good balance throughout. Square landing with an athletic finish. Threw fastball for strikes that flashed run at 77-78 mph. Curveball showed gradual action at 64-67 mph. Changeup flashed armside run at 72-74 mph.

Kyle Seebach, LHP, Rochelle, 2017
6-foot-6, 175-pound, left-handed pitcher with a lanky frame. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a short arm action. Tall and fall, online delivery with a square landing and upright finish. Fastball sat 77-78 mph. Curveball showed 1-7 shape with loose rotation and gradual action at 57-62 mph. Maintained arm speed on changeup that flashed fade at 70-72 mph.

Max Smithberg, RHP, Bartlett, 2017
6-foot, 155-pound, right-handed pitcher with good pitchability. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a quick, loose arm action. High leg lift to balance point, drop and drive online delivery. Smooth rhythm with an athletic finish. Threw fastball for strikes at 74-77 mph. Showed feel for both curveball and changeup. Curveball showed 11-5 shape with tight rotation at 67-69 mph. Maintained armspeed on changeup for strikes at 66-68 mph. Will continue to improve with added velocity.

Tyler Statler, RHP/1B, Hononegah, 2019
6-foot-3, 200-pound, RHP/1B. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a long am action. Tall and fall delivery with a closed landing. Slow paced delivery with easy effort. Fastball showed run at 72-73 topping out at 76 mph. Curveball showed 11-5 shape with loose rotation at 59-62 mph. Changeup sat 59-62 mph. Will continue to improve with coordination and maturity. Defensively has a long arm action from a ¾ arm slot. Plays thru the ball with a clean exchange and slower actions. Threw 75 mph across the infield. Offensively hits from a tall relaxed setup with a long stride. Pull hitter with a long swing path. 74 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 8.63.

Ethan Sund, C/RHP, Huntley, 2017
6-foot, 170-pound, right-handed hitting C/RHP. Offensively hits from a balanced setup with a short leg lift stride. Opposite field hitter with a short swing path. 79 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.70. Defensively has a short arm action from a high ¾ arm slot with compact throwing mechanics. Popped 2.25-2.31 and threw 68 mph from the crouch. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a short arm action. Tall and fall online delivery with some rhythm. Threw fastball for strikes at 71-73 mph. Curveball showed slider action at 68-71 mph. Changeup blended with fastball at 69-71 mph.

Stephen Zaremba, LHP, Barrington, 2017
5-foot-10, 153-pound, left-handed pitcher. On the mound works from an over the top arm angle with a long arm action. Tall and fall online delivery with a long draw out of the glove. Square landing with an athletic finish. Threw fastball down in the zone for strikes at 69-71 mph. Curveball showed 12-6 shape with loose rotation at 60-62 mph. Changeup blended with fastball at 68-69 mph.
