MCYSA International Showcase: Position Analysis

The MCYSA International Showcase took place on Tuesday July 28th at Lippold Park in Crystal Lake, IL. Today we start the analysis with position players.

2018 SS Danny Borgstrom leads the list of top postion players. Borgstrom showed soft, sure hands in the field with fluid footwork and a strong arm.

Jeremy Davis took the No. 3 spot showing a fluid left handed swing and solid foot speed on a slow track running the 60 at 6.89.

Top Prospects

1. Danny Borgstrom, SS/RHP, Morris, 2018
5-foot-9, 145-pound, left-handed hitting SS/RHP with an athletic frame. Defensively has a short-arm action from a high ¾ arm slot. Accurate throws with carry. Soft, sure hands with quick fluid footwork. Athletic fielder, plays thru the ball. Threw 79 mph across the infield. At the plate hits from a balanced, slightly open stance with a smooth load and short stride. Line-drive hitter with good balance and rhythm. Short path, with pull tendencies. 79 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.33. On the mound works from a ¾ arm angle with a short-arm action. Tall and fall online delivery, gets extension on his front side. From the stretch uses a slide step. Fastball sat 78-80 topping out at 81 mph showing slight cutting action. 2. Danny Sperling, SS, Wauconda, 2018
6-foot, 145-pound, left-handed hitting shortstop with a lanky, projectable frame. Defensively has a short-arm action from a ¾ arm slot with carry on throws. Soft hands with fluid footwork and a clean exchange. Athletic actions with good body control. Threw 75 mph across the infield. Offensively hits from a wide, slightly open stance. Short stride with a linear lower half. Short, level swing path with a fast bat and fluid rhythm. 75 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.53. Will continue to improve with maturity.

3. Jeremy Davis, OF, Geneva, 2017
5-foot-11, 155-pound, left-handed hitting outfielder with an athletic frame. Ran the 60 at 6.89. Offensively hits from a tall, open stance with a smooth load and leg kick stride. Creates whip with the hands and flashes a fast bat. Line drive pull hitter with fluid rhythm. Showed strength thru contact with 83 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively has a short arm action from a high ¾ arm slot. Quick arm flashed carry on throws. Plays thru the ball with fluid footwork and average hands. Threw 79 mph from the outfield.

4. Rich Campbell, RHP/OF, Loyola, 2017
6-foot-1, 165-pound, right-handed hitting RHP/OF with an athletic frame. On the mound works from a ¾ arm angle with a long quick arm action. Online delivery with a slightly closed landing and an upright finish. Fastball showed heavy running action at 81-84 mph. Slowed arm on curveball with 11-5 shape at 65-69 mph. Changeup showed armside run at 73-76 mph. Slider was best breaking ball at 70-71 mph. Defensively has a long arm action from a ¾ arm slot. Carry on throws with some accuracy. Plays thru the ball with a long transfer and fluid footwork. Threw 83 mph from the outfield. Offensively hits from a balanced setup with a short load and long stride. 5. Scott Ruedel, C, Bartlett, 2017
5-foot-10, 155-pound, right-handed hitting catcher with an athletic frame. Ran the 60 at 6.98. Defensively has a short arm action from a ¾ arm slot. Ok footwork with a quick release. Tall receiver in bullpens. Popped 2.07-2.18 and threw 73 mph from the crouch. Offensively hits from a balanced setup with a short load to backside and short stride. Collapses on backside with a long uphill swing path. Showed good feel for the barrel consistently squaring up balls in batting practice. 77 mph exit velocity from a tee.

Cory Busse, RHP/SS, Woodstock North, 2017
6-foot-3, 160-pound, RHP/SS with a lanky frame. On the mound works from an over-the-top arm angle with a short arm action. Tall and fall online delivery with some rhythm and a square landing. Threw fastball for strikes at 77-79 mph. Curveball showed 12-6 shape with gradual action at 61-63 mph. Showed good feel for changeup that flashed arm-side run at 70-73 mph. Defensively has a loose arm action from a ¾ arm slot. Carry on throws with some accuracy. Plays thru the ball with a quick, clean exchange. Threw 75 mph across the infield. Michael Chialdikas, SS, Lake Zurich, 2019

5-foot-10, 160-pound, right-handed hitting C/RHP. Offensively hits from a wide, balanced setup with short hand load to the backside. Inside out swing path with average balance. 75 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 8.24. Defensively has a short arm action from an over the top arm slot. Popped 2.31-2.47 and threw 66 mph from the crouch. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a long arm action. Tall and fall online delivery with a square landing. Fastball flashed run at 69-70 topping out at 71 mph. Cruveball showed 11-5 shape with loose rotation and gradual action at 60-61 mph. Changeup sat 62-64 mph.

Nate Jacobson, OF, Crystal Lake South, 2018
5-foot-10, 136-pound, right-handed hitting outfielder with a lanky frame. Defensively has a short arm action from a high ¾ arm slot, average arm strength that flashed carry. Plays thru the ball with a clean exchange. Threw 76 mph from the outfield. Offensively hits from a tall, narrow setup with a short stride and good balance. Grant Leader, RHP/C, Lyons Township, 2019
5-foot-7, 130-pound, right-handed hitting RHP/C with a small, athletic frame. Showed advance velocity and feel for size and age. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a short, quick arm action. Tall and fall, online delivery with a short leg lift. Smooth rhythm with level shoulders. Fastball sat 83-85 mph.
