Illinois Class of 2022 Rankings: Uncommitted Names-To-Know

Illinois Scouting Staff

Early last week, our staff updated the state’s Illinois 2022 rankings after a productive off-season and prior to the IHSA season kicking into full gear. This senior class is one of the most potent groups in recent memory, with high-end talent at the top that trickles down across our up-to-date board. To read more about our recent update, click HERE

We’ll dive deeper into the updated rankings today by shining some light on a handful of players that are still uncommitted. Learn more about this talented bunch of seniors looking for a place to play at the next level, below.

UNCOMMITTED NAMES-TO-KNOW

+ Currently the top uncommitted position player in the state, INF Matthew Morsovillo (Sandburg) oozes upside attached to a lanky 6-foot-4, 180-pound frame. We last saw him at our Senior Games event in August, where Morsovillo took one of the event’s best BP rounds after running a 7.17 in the 60-yard dash at his size. He stays short and compact to the ball with a clean repeatable right-handed stroke, finding feel for the barrel effortlessly while working gap-to-gap. There’s plenty to dream of with Morsovillo at the plate, especially factoring in the physical projection left to come on his frame and the above-average BLAST Motion metrics he posted from the event, too.

+ An early winner from the IHSA season, INF/RHP Spencer Stearns (Edwardsville), lands at No. 110 on our updated list and is still uncommitted. Stearns, who hits in the middle of the order and occupies third base when not on the mound, has been a catalyst for the Tigers red-hot start this spring and caught our scouts’ attention particularly at the Kickoff Classic. Here’s what our scouts had to say about his performance at that event:

“6-foot-2, 200-pound, broad-shouldered, strong build. Started at third base and hit in the three hole. Had a huge offensive day including a game-winning, walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh which capped off a four-run seventh inning comeback. Finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a walk. Strong, twitchy hands, creates loud contact and jump off the barrel. Continues to polish up his entire game. Arm flashes carry across the diamond at third base and his feet work clean and in rhythm. One of the top unsigned senior bats in the state.”

+ OF Joe Fiorenza (Jacobs) is a left-handed hitter with high-end athleticism and loud tools across the board. At our Preseason All-State event last March, Fiorenza darted his way to a 6.57 in the 60-yard dash and thoroughly displayed that athleticism at the plate. He swings an aggressive left-handed stroke with above-average hand speed, utilizing that hand twitch to create loud contact off the barrel from an elevated bat path. His offensive profile is that of a spark plug at the top of a lineup, which is where he was hitting when we saw the Golden Eagles last spring. Fiorenza was also up to 88 mph from the outfield with athletic feet and intentful actions to pair. He’ll certainly be one to watch this spring as one of the top prospects on a Jacobs team that finds themselves firmly inside our Power 25 rankings.

Joe Fiorenza

+ OF/C Ethan Rossi (Prospect) is a 5-foot-11, 190-pound, physical, defined right-handed hitter with a knack for hard contact in game. Rossi has advanced hand/wrist strength, a flat, repeatable path and the ability to backspin the baseballs to both gaps. He also continues to improve his foot speed with reports of him currently running a sub-7.0 60. The defensive position is still somewhat up in the air but the bat should profile wherever he ends up.

+ LHP Teddy Andrews (Hinsdale Central) stands at a highly projectable 6-foot-3, 186-pounds and provided us quite the upside look this fall at our Chicagoland Open. There, Andrews ran his fastball up to 88 mph, pitching at 86-87 mph throughout his ‘pen with a 60% zone rate on the pitch. He flashed above-average spin metrics (2,409 RPM avg.) on a low-70s curveball and limited spin on a 75-78 mph changeup thrown down in the zone, too. Andrews is currently the top-ranked uncommitted left-handed pitcher in the state’s senior class.

Teddy Andrews

+ C Kyle Odeshoo (Prospect) is a physically built 6-foot, 195-pound backstop with above-average bat strength that we’ve seen translate from a showcase setting to gameplay. Odeshoo’s produced noteworthy batted ball metrics via our TrackMan units in the past, reaching exit velocities as high as 94.7 mph, while averaging 92.3 mph off the barrel as well. We saw him show similar physicality at The Rock this summer, as he produced regular hard contact off the barrel in the brief sample size we saw. Defensively, Odeshoo’s arm has been up to 77 mph from a short, accurate slot and clean actions to pair. He’s the top uncommitted catcher on our updated senior rankings.

Kyle Odeshoo

+ One of the fastest players in the entire state, regardless of class, is OF Myles Supurgeci (Mount Carmel). At the Senior Games last August, Supurgeci dashed his way to a 6.45 in the 60-yard dash and, dating back to October of 2019, he’s never ran below a 6.77 on our lasers. It’s dynamic wheels that are capable of impacting the game at the plate, on the bases, or while roaming the outfield. We recently saw Supurgeci at the Kickoff Classic, having this to say about him:

“Unsigned Senior. Right-handed hitting outfielder, has top-end speed that impacts the game in all aspects. Quick first step and covers a lot of ground in the outfield with quick, bouncy feet and athletic actions. Offensively, short, quick swing, creates bat speed and surprising jump off the barrel given his 5-foot-7, 145-pound frame.”

Myles Supurgeci

+ SS Aidan Voss (Joliet Catholic) is a standout on the gridiron where he is fresh off leading the Hilltoppers to a 2021 4A State Championship and a perfect 14-0 season. This spring he has been making noise on the baseball field thanks to his high-end athleticism and left-handed bat. Voss is currently committed to Iowa Western for football but he has next level talent on the baseball field as well. If Voss decides to play baseball at the next level he has arguably the highest ceiling of any other uncommitted senior in the state.

+ C Keegan Connors (Jacobs) is another uncommitted senior for the Golden Eagles to note on our updated 2022 board. A left-handed hitter, Connors’ athleticism stands out, as he ran a 6.54 in the 60-yard dash at our Preseason All-State event last spring - an impressive mark regardless of position, but more notable given he’s a catcher. That athleticism is obvious in the batter’s box, as Connors displayed well above-average bat speed and rotational acceleration throughout BP, per Blast Motion. He was also up to 78 mph from the crouch, further solidifying a loud all-around array of tools for the uncommitted senior backstop.

Keegan Connors

+ Another winner from last year’s fall circuit, RHP Chase Krueger (Glenbard West) remains uncommitted, ranked inside the top-150 prospects in the state. The 6-foot, 185-pound senior works from a low average release height (4.5 feet) and produces heavy arm-side action on a fastball that’s been up to 89 mph, while typically pitching in the 84-86 mph range. He’ll complement it with a sweeping breaking ball from a near identical arm slot to his fastball, making for a relatively unique look on the mound. Krueger put together a dominant outing at The Rock this fall, pitching his team to a key pool play win that solidified their spot in the playoffs and led to an eventual tournament championship.

Chase Krueger

+ CIF Tommy Stricklin (Mundelein) is an ultra-physical 6-foot-2, 215-pound dual-sport athlete that popped at our Unsigned Senior Showcase this February. There, Stricklin took one of the loudest BP rounds we saw across our winter cycle, squaring up multiple batted balls over 100 mph, reaching a peak of 102.9 mph. His potent right-handed swing is currently slotted right in the middle of the Mustangs’ lineup, which is collectively one of the state’s toughest units, and we saw him rocket a double to straight away center field last Friday in their victory over McHenry. If Stricklin can continue to sure up his plate discipline he has a chance to be an impactful power bat at the next level.

+ RHP/OF’s Alex Willey (Normal West) and Jake Kohanzo (Barrington) are both physical two-way prospects who sit in the upper-80’s with their fastballs, have bat strength attached to their right-handed swings and are currently Top-160 prospects in the class. Willey, listed at 6-foot-5, 225-pounds, impressed to start the season at the Kickoff Classic. Here is what we had to say:

"Uncommitted right-hander, standing at 6-foot-5, 225-pounds. Works down the mound with a tall/fall operation, arm plays from an over the top slot. His fastball enters the zone at a tough angle, topping out at 89 mph while sitting in the 86-87 mph range and missing barrels. Willey’s curveball hovered in the 75 mph range, playing off an 11/5 plane and coming from a similar window to his fastball."

Alex Willey

+ A couple of other notable unsigned seniors to follow closely should be CIF Haden Kriston (Loyola), RHP Jackson Parrill (Collinsville) and LHP Freddie Elftmann (Wheaton North), among others.
