Sam Petersen Earns Future Games MVP
August 13, 2019
Relatively unknown on the national scene coming into the 2019 PBR Future Games, 2021 SS Sam Petersen (Ballard HS, IA) made the most of his chance on the big stage, shining forth in Atlanta over the course of the four day event. He filled the stat sheet on the workout day with a 6.67-second 60-yard dash time and 90 mph exit velocity off the tee before showcasing gap-to-gap power with quick hands from the right side, and smooth defensive play at shortstop.
And the production didn’t stop there…
In three games, the wiry-athletic, 5-foot-11, 165-pounder went 5-for-7 with a double and loud home run, five runs scored and two RBIs. He patiently tracked pitches, aggressive early on in counts, but also showcasing comfort in hitting from behind. His quick first step on the infield with smooth glove-to-hand transfers stood out defensively, and he even notched an outfield assist to showcase his all-around high-energy play. Giving all out effort on every play, Petersen put an exclamation point on his stellar week by scoring from second base on a sacrifice fly when the ball skirted slightly away from the catcher.
Continuing a rich tradition of talent coming from Team Minnesota/Iowa each year, Petersen’s all-around performance, from start to finish, earned him Most Valuable Player honors of the talent-rich event that included players from 38 different states and Canada. He joins fellow 2021 Iowan, 3B/OF Aaron Downs, who earned the award in 2018, and gives much promise to the class coming out of the Hawkeye State.
