By Matt Huck
Area Scout

Every Friday National Scouting Supervisor Nathan Rode provides a roundup of insider recruiting information and commitments throughout the PBR coverage area: The Buzz. CLICK HERE to take a look at this week’s National Buzz. With that in mind, let’s take an in depth look at the Illinois prospects who have committed to colleges, with detailed scouting information.

Joey Bellini, SS, Edgewater, 2016
University of Kentucky

Joey Bellini6/23/15 - 6-foot2, 150 pound middle infielder with a tall loose lean projectable young body. Very young body with a lot of upside. Loose  easy actions in the field with soft hands and good instincts. Sound mechanics with good body control. Light on his feet. Lacks ideal foot speed but makes up for it with good first step quickness and baseball instincts. Has enough arm to play on left side of infield. Has aggressive approach at the plate with a loose quick bat. Has good hand eye with a good bat path. Makes a lot of hard contact. Lacks strength right now but ball still jumps off his bat. Very projectable bat. Good hitting instincts. Will be fun to watch when his body starts filling out. Is also interesting behind the dish. Is a bit crude but certainly has the tools and the make up and the baseball instincts to become a catcher. I don’t think he has to yet because he’s a very good infielder. However, that makes him a bit more valuable knowing that it’s a possibility. Ran a 7.47 60. 86 mph exit bat speed velocity. 80 mph infield velocity. 2.0 pop time with 74 mph catchers velocity. Excellent academic kid with top of the chart grades.

Kendrick Calilao, RHP, The First Academy, 2018
University of Florida

2/13/15 - 5-10, 160 pound outfielder with a live athletic very young body. Good actions with an above avg ML arm. Looks like at least an avg runner. Good body and tools for such a young kid. Good approach with the bat and a good path. Good poise against a draftable arm. Quick bat with some strength now and a lot more to come. Avg power now. Stays inside ball well with very good hands. Will be fun to watch develop.

Zane Stephens, SS, Suwannee, 2017
Mississippi State

7/13/15 - Uncommitted incoming junior. 6-foot-2 155 pounds with a skinny and athletic frame. Loads with his lower half and his hands come down with his load. Groundball/line drive approach. Average bat speed and does not use much lower half. Average bat speed. In the field he attacks balls and has plenty of arm strength for SS.

CJ Van Eyk, RHP, Steinbrenner, 2017
Florida State

7/13/15 - 6-foot-2 180 pounds with a lean, athletic, and projectable frame. Relaxed at the plate, has rhythm, and gets a good separation for his load. Flat swing plane that produces line drives to all fields. Good range in the infield and attacks ball hit his way.

Tyler Fagler, RHP, Berkeley Prep, 2016
Dartmouth

2/20/15 - 6-foot-4 200 pound right hander with a tall, lean, projectable, and loose body. Young face and will easily add weight and strength. Takes ball out in line, and lands in line, and he has an over-the-top arm action that is loose and easy. His fastball has a good downward angle and he spots it up at 81-83 mph. He has a good curveball that got better as the game went on. It has a ¾ break, sharp and has good depth. He keeps it down in the zone and is able to command it. Throws it in all counts at 71-73 mph. Velocity should increase with maturity and strength. 6 IP, 7 K's, and 0 ER against Tampa Catholic.

Michael Bacica, RHP, Windermere Prep, 2018
University of North Carolina

1/27/15 Tall loose lean very projectable body with long arms and legs. Loose easy working arm from a high 3/4 slot. Big take away in back and lands across his body. Inconsistent release out front. Occasionally works around the ball. FB is a natural cutter at 80-83 mph. Occasionally gets under it and flattens out but mostly has late cut action to it. Didn't throw any secondary stuff. Very young kid with a very high ceiling. Will be interesting to follow.

South Florida State College

Jake Cross, LHP, Newsome, 2016
