Florida Draft Recap Day 2

Here is a rundown of the Florida High School players drafted on day two of the 2015 MLB Draft with detailed scouting information.

Thomas Szapucki, LHP, Dwyer
Rd. 5, No. 149, New York Mets

Szapucki, who stands at 6-foot-2, 190 pounds, shows two plus pitches at times with a fastball that has been up to 95 with life and his curveball, a pitch with depth and 3/4 break. His changeup sits 80-81 and he shows some feel for it. His arm is quick and loose. He has below-average command because of some inconsistencies in his deliveries that cause him to leave his arm behind and not get a consistent release out front. His stuff can be electric when he’s in the zone so a team that thinks they can correct his mechanics may jump up and take him. He is committed to Florida.

Jason Heinrich, LF, River Ridge
Rd. 5, No. 163, Baltimore Orioles

Heinrich is a strong, physical corner guy at 6-foot-1, 200 pounds. He has plus major league power thanks to strength and a quick bat. He’s a little unorthodox at the plate with some stiffness, but can be really dangerous when his path is consistent. He occasionally gets uphill and rolls over some balls, but he’s very aggressive. He was locked in at the World Wood Bat Championship in Jupiter last fall and everything he hit was a missile. He is athletic enough to play right field, but may end up at first base. He is committed to Central Florida.

Justin Cohen, C, Riverview
Rd. 6, No. 176, Miami Marlins

Athletic strong muscular lower half for durability. Solid receiver with an avg to above avg arm. Release was a bit slow but threw a guy out stealing 2B with strength and accuracy. Also showed plus raw power in BP and made a lot of hard contact in the game. Will have to quicken up release to be a consistent 2.0 around the bag. Could be a draft but may not be able to get him away from FSU.

Logan Allen, LHP, IMG Academy
Rd. 8, No. 231, Boston Red Sox

Allen worked hard in the offseason to improve his frame and is now durable, physical 6-foot-3, 200 pounds. He has good pitchability with average stuff. His fastball gets up to 92 with some tailing action and he locates it well. His breaking ball is mostly an average pitch, but can occasionally get soft and loopy. When that happens, he tends to cast it up and out of his hand, making it easier for hitters to pick up. He also flashed a slider this spring, an added offering to his arsenal. Allen competes well and can get outs when he’s without his best stuff. He is committed to South Carolina.
