Florida 2022 Rankings Update
September 15, 2020
The Fall season is upon us and that means it’s time for rankings update season. After a great summer of baseball, it was time to start updating our player rankings. Last week, we updated our 2021 rankings, which came to a total of 351 players. Today, we will update our Class of 2022 rankings, a class loaded with talent including 3 players inside the top 12 nationally.
The No. 1 player in the Florida Class of 2022 is now the No. 1 player in the entire country, and that player is OF Elijah Green (IMG Academy, Miami). Green is a five tool outfielder who can do it all. At 6-foot-3, 215 pounds, he has a very projectable frame and all the upside in the world. Green tore the cover off the ball this summer and finished it off with one of the best performances at the Area Code Games.
At No. 2 is one of the most talented and projectable left-handed arms that I’ve seen, LHP Brandon Barriera (American Heritage Plantation, Vanderbilt). Athletic frame at 6-foot-1, 165 pounds with plenty of room to fill out. Electric arm that sits in the low 90’s with a tight, sharp breaking slider. Barriera also has an above average changeup that creates a tough at bat for any batter. Look for Barriera to be one of the first left handed arms off the board come the 2022 Draft.
At No. 3 is one of the best pure right-handed hitters in the class in 3B Sal Stewart (Westminster Christian, Vanderbilt). Stewart was one of the biggest standouts as an underclassman at the Florida ProCase this summer. He displayed above average bat speed and power to all fields. The bat plays in game as well as he consistently is on the barrel against high level pitching. The glove and arm are both above average and will allow him to be an impact player at the hot corner at the next level.
Coming in at No. 4 is one of my favorite left handed bats in the class in SS Colby Shelton (Bloomingdale, Clemson). Shelton has been on the rise for a while now and continues to show that he is one of the best left handed hitters in the country. Athletic frame that is starting to become more physical. Uses the entire field and started to show power to all fields as well this spring/summer.
Rounding out the top 5 is one of the biggest risers in these rankings in LHP/1B Zachary Root (Fort Myers, Florida). Tall, lanky 6-foot-1, 165 pound frame. Real two-way potential with a fastball in the upper 80’s/low 90’s from the left side. Left handed hitter who creates leverage in his swing and has shown the ability to drive the ball to all fields. Really like the two-way upside as he continues to fill out and get stronger.
