Miami, FL-In one of the best high school baseball games I have personally ever attended, No. 1 Archbishop McCarthy took on No. 12 Westminster Christian. In a game that featured 11 Miami commits, it did not disappoint the several hundred fans in attendance.

McCarthy started 2017 RHP Daniel Federman (Miami), who was very impressive in his three innings of work. He showed a short, quick arm action and commanded a fastball that ranged from 90-92 mph to both sides of the plate. He created quality angles with the pitch and coupled it with a slider that showed some swing and miss capabilities at 76-78 mph. Federman went three innings while giving up no runs on three hits while striking out six.

2017 RHP Joe Perez (Miami) came in to replace Federman and was lights out. Perez, who has a chance to be an early-round pick come June, showed why last night. Perez sat 94-95 in the first inning, touching 98, and continued to touch multiple 97s and 98s in his third inning of work as well. Perez went three innings while giving up no runs, two hits and striking out eight. Perez also had two hits on the day, a single and a double, as well as drawing a walk.

2017 LHP Dylan Cloonan (Miami) made the start for Westminster and would nearly match the impressive performances from Federman and Perez. Cloonan went 5.1 innings, giving up no runs on six hits and while striking out five. Cloonan sat 88-90 with his fastball most of the night, touching 91. He also showed a slider with quality shape at 72-74 mph.

Sam Fernandez replaced Cloonan with one out in the sixth and get Westminster out of a bases loaded jam, inducing a line drive double-play to the right fielder who threw the runner out at first.

2020 RHP Jamar Fairweather came in for Westminster in the seventh and was extremely composed for a freshman. Fairweather featured a fastball at 84-87 mph and showed above average feel for an above average changeup at 73-74 mph. After a clean seventh, a pair of walks and a strikeout would lead to a first and second with two out situation. A near back pick by Melendez almost ended the inning, but a safe call gave Ubaldo Lopez the ability to hit what was an extremely tough hop for an infield single pushing McCarthy up 1-0 in the eighth.

2019 LHP Yordani Carmona (Miami) replaced Perez for McCarthy in the bottom of the seventh. Carmona got out of a jam in the seventh with two outs by striking out Vilar with the bases loaded. He then clinched the win for McCarthy in the eighth, fittingly ending with an unassisted putout to the player who stood out all evening, Joe Perez.
