2018 PBR FL Underclass Games: Middle Infielder Breakdown

Saturday June 23rd at Henley Field in Lakeland, FL, the top underclass high school prospects ranging from the 2020-2022 classes participated in the 2018 Florida Underclass Games which is one of the premier scouting event for the 2018 summer season. With a talented roster on hand, players participated in a pro-style workout followed by two ten inning games.
Over the next couple of weeks, we will breakdown each position through stats, report, video, and more. Positions will be broken down by: outfielder, corner infielder, middle infielder, catcher, pitcher only and two-way players. This is followed by top overall prospects and Future Games and Jr Future Games invitations.Today we take a look at the middle infielders, starting with the top five and followed by the best of the rest.
Dorian Gonzalez Jr SS / 2B / Belen Jesuit, FL / 2021Uncommitted. Currently ranked No. 12 in the Florida 2021 Class. Currently stands at 5-foot-9, 180 pounds on a compact frame with quick twitch, athletic actions. At the plate he showed extremely advanced offensive ability. Simple, strong, and compact swing from the left side which consistently finds the barrel. This translated to a hard hit single in the game on a line drive back up the middle. Registered one of the top exit velocities of the day at 90 mph. Shows athleticism and quick feet in the field with confident hands. Throws to the bag are accurate and on line which topped out at 74 mph. Clocked in at 7.28 seconds for his 60 yard dash time. High follow for his class.

Blake DeLamielleure SS / RHP / Bartram Trail, FL / 2020Jacksonville recruit. Currently stands at 5-foot-11, 180 pounds with an athletic frame. In the field he shows lateral range, moving freely to his left and right while fielding the ball under control and out in front with an accurate throw to the bag that topped out at 80 mph. Trusts his hands and fields the ball with confidence. Offensively, he shows quick hands and a level path through the zone while demonstrating barrel control and the ability to drive the ball into the gaps. Good hand-eye, shows a balanced approach. Takes smart at-bats. As he has continued to add to his frame the power has come, but there’s still more to come as he matures.

Blake Wright SS / 2B / Clearwater Central Catholic , FL / 2020Rankings StateRank: 97 / POS: 20
Uncommitted. Currently stands at 6-foot, 175 pounds with a strong, athletic frame and room to still fill out. Continued to stand out offensively where he consistently found the barrel during batting practice, spraying line drives all over the field deep into the gaps. The hands are quick and he shows a confident approach with a short, quick swing. Takes smart at-bats and jumps on the fastball. Barreled an RBI single into left field during game play while also registering a 90 mph exit velocity in the cage off a tee. In the field he shows athletic actions, range, and sure hands. Throws to the bag are accurate and topped out at 80 mph. As Wright continues to fill out his frame he should see a jump in power at the plate. High uncommitted follow that shouldn’t be uncommitted for too much longer.

Malik Young SS / 2B / Bishop Kenny, FL / 2020Rankings StateRank: 84 / POS: 17
Uncommitted. Currently stands at 6-foot-1, 170 pounds and has grown several inches. Plenty of room to add to his frame. In the field he showed athletic actions in the middle, making multiple plays at short. The added height has him out of sync at times, but can see the upside and athleticism in all of his actions. Offensively, the added height has some length at times, but again the athleticism provides him feel to hit. There is present leverage and bat speed and overall a lot of potential.

Sal Grinstead 2B / 3B / Spruce Creek, FL / 2020Uncommitted. Currently stands at 5-foot-9, 170 pounds with a strong, compact frame. The frame has definitely added strength. Offensively, he has a simple, compact swing. There is a toe to heel toad and works with a level, line drive swing. Feel for the barrel, could benefit from a stronger front side, but there is barrell awareness and present hit ability. Defensively, works under control with soft hands and good first step. Could improve release, but has solid all round defensive action. He has an offensive second base type profile and can see more power coming in the future.

Now we take a look at the best of the rest, in no particular order:
Colby Shelton SS / 2B / Bloomingdale , FL / 2022Currently stands at 5-foot-10, 150 pounds on a lean, athletic frame. Young middle infielder who will continue to see jumps in his overall game as he continues to fill out his frame and mature. Offensively, he starts from a slightly closed, wider stance in the box with above average bat speed for his age and quick hands. Consistently found the barrel from the left side of the plate during batting practice which resulted in multiple hard hit line drives, most notable into the gaps. Confident hitter who looks to drive the ball. Registered an exit velocity of 77 mph in the cage. In the field he shows bounce in his step with athletic, quick twitch actions. Fields the ball with confidence and makes the plays with an accurate throw to the bag that topped out at 75 mph. Clocked in at 7.38 seconds for his 60 yard dash time.

Joel Joffe 2B / C / Dr. Phillips, FL / 2020Uncommitted. Currently stands at 5-foot-8, 140 pounds on a lean, compact frame. Offensively, he shows a balanced approach at the plate with a simple, repeatable swing. During batting practice he consistently squared the ball up and made solid contact into the gaps. Registered an exit velocity of 77 mph in the cage. Had a double into the right-center field gap during game play. In the field he shows the ability to range backhand and forehand while fielding the ball under control and with confidence. Shows athletic actions. Throws across the diamond were accurate and to the bag which topped out at 72 mph.

Cade Haddix SS / 3B / Winter Park, FL / 2021Uncommitted. Currently stands at 6-foot, 162 pounds with a lean, athletic frame. Still room to fill out. Offensively, he starts from a wide base and has a small leg kick for his load. Some feel for the barrel with a level to slight uphill finish on his swing, creating loft and driving the ball into the outfield. At times he can be out on his front foot, but when he stays back and utilizes his lower half, he was able to drive the ball with intent into the gaps. Registered an exit velocity of 80 mph in the cage. As Haddix adds to his frame, he should see a jump in gap-to-gap power. In the field there is some choppiness in his step, but he fields the ball under control and makes the plays. Throws to the bag were accurate and topped out at 70 mph. Clocked in at 7.56 secs for his 60 yard dash time.

Jack Hodges SS / RHP / St. John's Country Day, FL / 2020Flagler recruit. Currently stands at 5-foot-11, 155 pound with a lean frame and room to fill out. Offensively, stands tall, starting slightly open. Has rhythm and works closed. Trusts his hands and works out in front. Defensively, Defensively, works under control, could benefit from some added rhythm, tempo. The actions are sound and hands work well.

Logan O'Brien 2B / SS / Osceola, FL / 2020Uncommitted. Currently stands at 5-foot-9, 145 pounds. Offensively, has a preset load and works out over the front foot. Can have some steepness in path, but is simple to the ball. Defensively, he has a quality first step and hands work in front. Good, quick release, Throws topped out at 56 mph.

Dylan Mock SS / SS / Lafayette, FL / 2020Uncommitted. Currently stands at 5-foot-10, 165 pounds. Ra a 7.11 60 and has a really clean gait and can see him being a well above average runner going forward. Offensively, he stands tall with a confident presence in the box. Can be a little rotational, but stays level through the zone with present bat speed. Consistent hard contact in BP. Athleticism translates defensively where he moves athletically, with strong lower half and solid hands. Topped out at 73 mph, but has present athleticism and bat speed.

Gavin Miller SS / 2B / North Marion, FL / 2021Uncommitted. Currently stands at 5-foot-7, 160 pounds. Defensively, he works low through the ball with rhythm. Hands work well out in front of the body. Offensively, the switch hitter is a near mirror image from both side. Working a bit more crouched left handed he has a bit of a smaller leg kick and stays short to the ball. Right handed, he is slightly more upright with a bigger leg kick. Some length, but shows more strength. Has ability and potential from both sides.

Jake Mummau SS / SS / Palm Harbor University, FL / 2021Uncommitted. Currently stands at 5-foot-10, 150 pounds on a lean, athletic frame. There is big projection in the athletic action and frame. Offensively, he has a toe tap load which shortens the stride at times. He overcomes athletically with loose wrists, working out over the front foot with present bat speed and leverage. Can see having power as he matures and learns to use his lower half. Defensively, he has rangy, fluid action. There is function athleticism with a quick first step and range to glove and hand sides. He shows an advanced feel and big upside all around.

Spencer Mangum SS / 3B / Oviedo, FL / 2020Uncommitted. Currently stands at 6-foot, 155 pounds with a projectable frame. Offensively, he stand upright and uses a simple load. There is some rotational tendencies and would like to see him use the lower half and be a little more aggressive through the zone. The hands work well and the barrel is level through the zone. Registered an exit velocity of 82 mph. Defensively, works upright, hands work and topped out at 68 mph across the infield.
