2018 Florida Unsigned Senior Games Positional Breakdown: Catchers

Lakeland, FL- On September 8th, the 2018 Florida Unsigned Senior Games took place at Henley Field which featured some of the top uncommitted 2019s in the state. Players participated in a pro-style workout followed by a game.

Over the next week, we will breakdown each player by position through report. Today, we take a look at all the catcher's in attendance:

Joseph Simmons C / SS / Edgewater, FL / 2019

One of the biggest standouts of the day, the physical 5-foot-10, 190 pound catcher is strong, but maintains his flexibility. Has overall above average defensive actions. The athleticism plays, he maintains quality receiving positions with a clean and quick transfer and showed consistently accurate throws at 2.01-2.07. Offensively, The strength also translates. Starting slightly open, he works closed in his load and stays balanced and simple. Creates above average bat speed, an exit velocity of 91 mph, and power potential. Had a triple in the game and overall will be a solid addition as an above average defender with power potential.

Cameron Martinez C / 2B / North Marion, FL / 2019

5-foot-9, 180 pounds, he is athletic and flexible defender. Hands work well and throw were accurate with pop times ranging from 2.14-2.2. Offensively, he works in rhythm with a leg kick trigger. He creates present bat speed and was on the barrel in all three at-bats where he lined out all three times. Created above average bat speed and strength with exit velocity of 89 mph. The swing is simple and level and the present bat to ball skills should translate to the next level.

Austin Galda C / OF / Hernando, FL / 2019

Athletic 6-foot, 180 pound C/OF. Defensively, behind the plate the athleticism plays well with quality footwork, had pop times that ranged from 2.12-2.3. In the outfield, he ranges well and showed an average and accurate arm that topped out at 80 mph. Offensively, he features a simple and compact swing. He has a short load, but gets separation and allows him to stay level through the zone. Will continue to improve as he adds strength, but has present line drive ability.

Emmanuel Cavieres C / 3B / Mandarin, FL / 2019

5-foot-9, 200 pound stocky catcher. Defensively, he has strong wrists and a clean transfer. Pop times ranged from 2.1-2.2 and topped out at 71 mph. Offensively, he starts slightly open and a small leg kick trigger. A somewhat short stride, when he clears the back side he generates bat speed and an exit velocity of 84 mph.

Hudson Welch C / OF / Lake Minneola, FL / 2019

The projectable 6-foot, 155 pound catcher has some present athleticism. Defensively, he blocks and receives well. The transfer to release could continue to improve, but has present arm strength and threw better in game than the workout. Pop times were 2.04-2.1 in game and 2.14-2.2 in workout. Offensively, he has a simple swing. There is some steepness in the path, but levels out when he gets into the lower half. There are present tools and upside with added strength. Had a single and an RBI in the game.

Dylan Symonds C / Oxbridge Academy, FL / 2019

5-foot-9, 195 pounds the stocky catcher has a durable frame. Defensively, he showed strong wrists and a quick transfer with pop times ranging from 2.1-2.14. Offensively, he has a small leg kick and gets down on time. He has a strong, balanced lower half, but could access more strength as he learns to sink into the backside while still clearing hips. The hands work loose and showed ability to find the barrel, driving balls from gap-to-gap in BP.
