2015 Draft Blog
May 17, 2015
Several states in Prep Baseball Report's coverage area have their own scout blog, covering the landscape of high school baseball to no end. The Draft Blog compiles any of those entries pertinent to the current draft year so you can read it in one, central location. The 2015 Major League Baseball Draft takes place in early June and there are plenty of prospects within PBR's coverage that anticipate hearing their name called.
Hoeing Flashes His Upside - 5/14/15
By Nathan Rode
National Supervisor
In his sixth start of the season, RHP Bryan Hoeing (Batesville HS, IN) went up against Franklin County HS, IN, in front of about a dozen scouts and cruised through seven innings. His fastball was in the 88-91 mph range the whole game with good arm-side life that induced weak contact from opposing hitters.
Hudson Continues To Dominate - 5/14/15
By Ryan Quigley
Illinois Scouting Director
LHP Bryan Hudson (Alton HS, IL) is lanky and athletic at 6-foot-8, 215 pounds with wide shoulders, a high waist and extremely long levers. He is quickly climbing up draft boards this spring with dominant performances. Signability aside, he is a potential early-round pick. Hudson works from a short, quick, high-3/4 arm slot with a tall-and-fall delivery.
Montgomery, Watson Face Off - 5/13/15
By Nathan Rode
National Supervisor
A few dozen scouts, including a bunch of crosscheckers and directors, showed up to Lawrence North HS, IN, to see Wildcats RHP Nolan Watson. They also got an added bonus with RHP Jarrett Montgomery (Lawrence Central HS, IN) getting the start in the rivalry game. Neither pitcher had their best stuff, but hits were hard to come by for both teams.
Madden Proves He’s Colorado’s Top Pitcher - 5/12/15
By John Cackowski
Colorado Scouting Director
Currently ranked the No. 3 prospect in Colorado’s 2015 class, RHP/3B Ryan Madden (Fairview HS, CO) is committed to Oklahoma as a two-way player. On the mound, Madden has a choppy delivery that gives him deception. He uses a quick pace and three-pitch mix.
Grady Delivers Solid Outing - 5/5/15
RHP Malcolm Grady (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, IL), a Wabash Valley JC recruit and the No. 13 prospect in Illionois’ 2015 class, stands at 6-foot-4, 195 pounds. He has received considerable pro interest this season due to his projection and perceived signability. Against Lockport HS, his velocity wasn’t the same as earlier in the season when he hit 92 mph multiple times, but he was consistently around 87-89 for his entire appearance.
Pickett Finding A Groove - 4/30/15
OF Greg Pickett (Legend HS, CO) got off to a slow start this season, going 2-for-14 in his first six games, but the Mississippi State recruit has turned it on since. He has at least one hit in 10 of his last 13 games and more than half his hits on the season are for extra bases. Against Regis Jesuit HS this week, he went 1-for-5 with a home run, giving him six on the year.
Fenter Shows Better Command - 4/29/15
RHP Gray Fenter (West Memphis HS, AR) has a large frame and thick build at 6-foot-1, 210 pounds. In his start Wednesday night, he attacked the zone with his fastball, sitting 92-94 mph and touching 96.

Nikorak Strikes Out 10 - 4/27/15
RHP Mike Nikorak (Stroudsburg HS, PA) took the hill Friday, making just his fifth appearance of the 2015 season. It was heavily attended as a few dozen scouts were in attendance, including several scouting directors.
An Alabama recruit, Nikorak overmatched opposing hitters even though his stuff was inconsistent. He went five innings—the game was shortened by the mercy rule—striking out 10 while walking four and allowing one hit.
Vierling Bests O’Fallon - 4/25/15
Two-way talent Matt Vierling (Christian Brothers College HS, MO), who’s one of the top prospects in the Midwest, took to the hill on Saturday outside St. Louis. The Notre Dame recruit didn’t disappoint, as he pitched the Cadets to a 2-1 victory over host O’Fallon HS, IL. Vierling, who’s the No. 1 2015 prospect in Missouri, allowed one run and four hits in 5.2 innings.
Enright Wins Without Best Stuff - 4/24/15
About a dozen scouts showed up to The Steward School, VA, to see RHP Nic Enright Friday evening as he faced St. Anne’s Belfield HS, VA. He didn’t have his best stuff, but battled enough to get the win.

By Shon Plack
Missouri Scouting Director
RHP Kyle Wilson (Raymore-Peculiar HS, MO) had a host of scouts in to see him pitch Thursday. He sat 90-92, touching 93 several times.
Hoeing Makes Second Start After ACL Tear - 4/21/15
By Phil Wade
Indiana Executive Director
RHP Bryan Hoeing (Batesville HS, IN) has quickly returned from tearing his ACL and made his second start of the 2015 season Tuesday evening. The 6-foot-6 right-hander appears to be nearing full strength. He pitched four innings in a 3-0 victory, striking out eight while allowing a one hit and a hit batter.
Russell Fans Eight In First Start - 4/18/15
By Mark De La Garza
Northeast Indiana Area Scout
RHP Ashe Russell (Cathedral Catholic HS, IN) made his first start of 2015 on Saturday. He’s physically strong and mature. In five innings, he struck out eight while allowing three hits and four walks. His first pitch was 93 mph and he sat 90-93 throughout his appearance. He has a quick arm through a 3/4 slot. His slider sat 82-84 with hard, late break.

By Jerry Shank
Maryland Scouting Director
RHP Hunter Parsons (Parkside HS, MD) threw a five-inning no-hitter on Saturday against rival Bennett HS, MD, with eight strikeouts. Parsons pitched at 90-91 mph in the first inning then sat 87-90 mph in his final four innings of work in front of the pro scouts in attendance.
Jenkins, Montgomery Take The Hill At Super Prep - 4/10/15
Despite some nasty weather, Kentucky’s Ballard HS hosted the 2015 Super Prep Series last week and had some interesting draft prospects in attendance. Kentucky scouting director Chris Fuller was bouncing around the various fields and filed the following reports on RHPs Liam Jenkins (Lincoln-Way North HS, IL) and Jarrett Montgomery (Lawrence Central HS, IN).
Stadler Dominates Carmel - 4/7/15
RHP Fitz Stadler (Glenbrook South HS, IL), an Arizona State recruit and Illinois’ No. 8 prospect in the 2015 class, pitched against Carmel HS, IL, on a frigid afternoon and threw a five-inning no hitter. Stadler stands at 6-foot-8, 220 pounds, is athletic and moves extremely well for his size. He struck out 11 in the game shortened by the mercy rule and walked two.
Burkholder, Jenkins Face Off - 4/2/15
In a must-see game, two of the top pitchers from Illinois and Indiana’s 2015 classes squared off in an early season matchup. RHPs Liam Jenkins (Lincoln-Way North HS, IL) and Noah Burkholder (Crown Point HS, IN) will be high follows throughout the spring and did scouts a favor by going head-to-head this week.
Jenkins, an Arizona State recruit, sat 91-93 mph in the first inning, touching 94 multiple times. He held his velocity well in the middle innings, sitting 90-92 and then was 88-90 in the fifth.
Burkholder allowed two runs in an abbreviated outing in which he was on a 50-pitch limit. He has a plus frame at 6-foot-6, 205 pounds with wide shoulders. He works from a high-3/4 arm slot and lands in line with home plate. He allowed two runs in 1.2 on two hits and two walks while striking out three.
Grady Makes His 2015 Debut - 4/1/15
RHP Malcolm Grady (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, IL) is lanky and athletic at 6-foot-4, 195 pounds and came out firing in his first outing of the year. He ranged from 89-92 in the first, with a majority of his fastballs being 91-92.
Donovan Goes Deep - 3/30/15
Currently the top prospect in Illinois, SS Charlie Donovan (Westmont HS, IL) stands at 5-foot-11, 180 pounds and hits from the left side. Before a game against Nazareth HS, IL, he took batting practice at Westmont and showed a line-drive, gap-to-gap approach and spray line-drive home runs to all fields.
Logan Allen Cruises at IMG National Classic - 3/30/15
By Nathan Rode
National Supervisor
+ Starting for IMG Academy in its first-round game against Port St. Lucie HS, FL, was LHP Logan Allen, a South Carolina recruit. Allen has a strong frame and looks to have shed some weight since last summer and his arsenal has benefited from being in better shape.
Little Strikes Out Nine In First Spring Start – 3/30/15
Making his 2015 debut, LHP Brendon Little (Conestoga HS, PA) showed a lively fastball at 92-93 mph in his first inning of work. He was 90-92 in the second inning and 88-90 in the third—after a long layoff due to a nine-run half inning from his offense.
Morris makes spring debut – 3/25/15
By PBR Maryland Staff
Mother Nature has not been kind to Maryland so far, but the season has started and RHP Cody Morris (Reservoir HS, MD) made his debut in front of more than a dozen scouts. As expected, he had some rust, but the 6-foot-5, 205-pound South Carolina recruit sat 89-92 with late run, mainly utilizing his fastball and overpowering the Hammond HS, MD, lineup in his three innings of work.
Jenkins, Ostrowski Make Spring Debuts - 3/21/15
By Sean Duncan
Executive Director
Baseball is underway in Illinois and the Lincoln-Way North HS duo of RHP Liam Jenkins and LHP Kyle Ostrowski made their spring debuts. It wasn’t the best look, given the 40-degree temperatures and how early it is for them.
Jenkins, the No. 5 prospect in Illinois’ 2015 class, has a hulking frame at 6-foot-8, 235 pounds. He came out hot, sitting mostly 90-92 in the first, touching 93 once.
Ostrowski, the No. 2 prospect in Illinois and a Purdue recruit, pitched the final two innings of this game. There wasn’t much to be gleaned from his brief stint, other than he was his usual self, showing off his athleticism and clean, easy arm action.
The Rode Show: Day 7 - 3/21/15
After a look at one of the country's top underclassman, The Rode Show returned to the draft scene for its final day of the first chapter in Florida. RHP Cole Sands (North Florida Christian HS, FL), a Florida State recruit and one of the top righties in the country, was without his best stuff against Tampa Jesuit HS on Saturday, but still competed throughout his outing. Sands is the younger brother of LHP Carson Sands, who was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the fourth round last year.
Dalesandro Out To Prove It With His Bat - 3/21/15
By Ryan Quigley
Illinois Scouting Director
C Nick Dalesandro (Joliet Catholic Academy, IL) is 6-foot-2, 185 pounds, wiry and athletic with room to add weight. The knock on Dalesandro has been on whether or not he will hit enough and he looks to be on a mission to prove scouts wrong. In early batting practice, he hit seven balls out from left field to left center. It’s 335 feet down the line and 370 feet in the gaps at Joliet Catholic.
The Rode Show: Day 5 - 3/19/15
Against Tampa Prep, SS Brendan Rodgers (Lake Mary HS, FL) laced a single up the middle in his first at-bat before popping and grounding out weakly in his next two. He has looked a little anxious at times this week and was caught out on his front foot in this game. In his fourth at-bat, he stayed back and showed off his good, short and quick swing, launching a ball to left-center field for a home run. It was his fifth of the season.
After seeing Lake Mary win, we were off to Leesburg, FL, to see RHP Brady Singer (Eustis HS, FL). Singer has a tall, lean frame at 6-foot-5, 180 pounds with plenty of room to fill out and add strength down the road. The first thing that jumped out about the Florida recruit was while he was loosening up to throw his pregame session in the bullpen.
The Rode Show: Day 4 - 3/18/15
RHP Triston McKenzie (Royal Palm Beach HS, FL) had a pitch limit of 50 for his start on Wednesday afternoon, but needed just 48 to breeze through five innings. He struck out five and allowed three baserunners—two hits and a hit batter. Two of those were erased on an interference call and pickoff so he faced just one over the minimum.
SS Ryan Mountcastle (Hagerty HS, FL), a Central Florida recruit, had a bout with the flu recently, but seemed to be back at full strength despite losing about 10 pounds in a week. Even with the wind blowing in, Mountcastle launched several balls out of the park in batting practice, showing off his big, easy raw power. He has long limbs so it’ll be hard for him to have a short, compact swing, but it certainly looked shorter and more direct than last summer.
The Rode Show: Day 3 - 3/17/15
LHP Thomas Szapucki (Dwyer HS, FL), a Florida recruit, took the hill Tuesday night with at least 15 scouts in the stands to see him go against SS Jonathan India (American Heritage-Delray HS, FL). There also at least three scouting directors and a front office executive there.
Earlier in the day, we caught a few more at-bats from SS Brendan Rodgers (Lake Mary HS, FL) in a loss to Chiles HS, FL. Rodgers was 0-for-2, but drove in two runs with a groundout and sacrifice fly. He looked to be off balance, hitting off his front side.
The Rode Show: Day 2 - 3/16/15
By Nathan Rode
National Supervisor
The first game on the docket for Monday was American Heritage-Delray HS, FL, going against Sanford Seminole HS, FL. American Heritage-Delray has SS Jonathan India, a Florida recruit and the No. 10 prospect in the state. It was a big day for India, as he went 2-for-3 with a home run, double and four RBIs. In his first two at-bats, India saw just two pitches. The first one cleared the left-field wall for a home run. After a groundout and sacrifice fly, he hit a long double to right-center field to knock in two more runs.
After seeing India, it was time to head down the road to see SS Brendan Rodgers (Lake Mary HS, FL). Playing against Barron Collier HS, FL, Rodgers was 2-for-5 with a double and run scored. He hit a few balls hard, with the double going down the left field line. He lined out softly to the shortstop, who made a nice play, in his second at-bat.
The Rode Show: Day 1 - 3/15/15
By Nathan Rode
National Supervisor
The Canadian Junior National Team faced off against the Toronto Blue Jays Sunday afternoon and a large contingent of scouts was on present to see Team Canada’s talent on display.
1B Josh Naylor (St. Joan of Arc HS, ON) had his usual aggressive approach, taking big hacks with his electric bat speed and finished the day 1-for-4 with a run scored. OF Demi Orimoloye (St. Matthew HS, ON) went 0-for-4, but put the ball in play in every at-bat and even drove a long fly ball to the warning track in left.
OF Miles Gordon (St. Ignatius of Loyola Collegiate HS, ON) didn’t collect a hit either, but certainly catches attention with his lean frame at 6-foot-1, 180 pounds and speed.
OF Tristan Pompey (Jean Vanier Catholic SS, ON) was 0-for-4 with an RBI. He has quick-twitch athleticism and speed, though his overall game is raw.
RHP Mike Soroka, a 6-foot-4, 195-pound righty, made his 2015 debut and allowed seven runs (one earned) on six hits and one walk while striking out two in two innings. Don’t read too much into the result as it was a 17-year-old going against major league hitters and Soroka remained confident in himself after the game. He started out strong, sitting 93-94 mph on the first several fastballs and was 91-92 out of the stretch while showing some life.
Singer Strikes Out 10 - 3/11/15
RHP Brady Singer (Eustis HS, FL) struck out 10 against Lake Minneola HS, FL, allowing two runs on four hits in seven innings of work. His fastball had run and sink, ranging from 87-94 mph in this outing. He sat mostly at 89-91 for the whole game.
Everett Makes 2015 Debut - 3/11/15
Rain washed out games in Louisiana on Wednesday so PBR Louisiana state director Trey Sofio jumped in the car and headed over to Gulf Shores, AL, to see 2015 RHP Donny Everett (Clarksville HS, TN) and filed this report:
+ A 6-foot-2, 220-pound righty, Everett has an athletic, extremely strong and imposing frame. He has a clean, loose arm action and his delivery is in line. He pitches with some effort and has above-average arm speed out of a high-3/4 release. He displayed a true power fastball in this outing.

By Justin Burgess
Florida Area Scout
RHP Cole Sands (North Florida Christian HS, FL) was sharper in his second outing of the season, facing Bay HS. The Florida state recruit showed an improved slider, which broke more like a cutter, but late. It doesn't have two-plane break, but it's tight and has late action at 82-85 mph.
Gulf Coast HS, FL VS Naples HS, FL - 2/13/15
