Top Prospect Games 2017 Top Overall Players

The Prep Baseball Report’s Top Prospect Games took place on August 8th and 9th at the Slammers South Baseball Facility in Englewood, Colorado.  89 prospects showed up and strutted their stuff in a pro-style workout. Over the next several days the PBR Scouting staff will roll out position-by-position rankings of the event, culminating with the Top Ten Overall Prospects from the showcase.

Our first two analysis of the event focused on the catchers, outfielders, corners, middle infielders, and pitchers. Here is a look at the top ten players in the 2017 class who stood out at the event.

Austin Chouinard, SS, Regis Jesuit, 2017
Currently ranked No. 5. 6-foot-0, 185-pounds. Bats and throws right. Has grown since last time we saw him. We love his size and strength. Might project as a corner at next level.  Athletic in stance, short to the ball with hands, and smooth level swing that can be explosive. Very quiet and little movement, and long through extension. Just does the job at the plate. Gap to gap power with good carry on the ball. Impressive 91 mph exit velo off the tee. Was given nicest swing award at event. Throws well from position at 84 mph and accurate. Showed nice range back hand side. First time we got to see him pitch. Simple smooth delivery with minimum effort. Square to plate, high 3/4 arm slot with fastball at 79-80 mph touching 81. Curveball was 66-68 mph with nice 11/5 break. Ran a 7.63 60. One of the top 2017 prospects in the state.

Eric Cox, OF, Cherokee Trail, 2017
Currently ranked No. 20. 5-foot-11, 200 pounds. Bats and throws right. Cox is a strong muscular outfielder. At the plate he utilizes an open stance with a toe tap that generates a bat whip good for 88 mph exit velo off the tee. Could generate more bat speed if he used legs more. Ball jumps off bat. Had a strong arm from the outfield at 88 mph. Cox showed good base running instincts plus speed on the bases. Cox ran a 7.09 60 time. We like his potential and athletic ability. When he learns to use lower half more in his swing he could show some good power potential. He was voted 2017 player with most tools at the event.

Tyson Hays,C/3B,Grandview High School, 2017
Currently ranked No. 16. Hays continues to show he is one of the top 2017 catching prospects in the state. The 5-foot-10, 185-pound prospect ran a 7.62 60-yard dash and showcased an 91 mph bat exit velocity which was up from 88 mph at the Denver Metro Prospect ID. Hays stands tall at the plate and has a level line-drive swing that generates pull power that comes predominantly from his upper half. He creates good barrel whip leading to the ball jumping off his bat when he squares the baseball. He displayed a top pop time of 2.04 from the pitcher not a coach throwing, and was 73 mph out of the crouch. Gains good ground on throws. Hays has soft hands and frames well with little movement. Was 80 mph from 3B.

Jake Hammons, SS, Rock Canyon, 2017
Currently ranked No. 17. 5-foot-10, 180 pounds. Bats and throws right. First time we have seen Hammons and we came away impressed. At the plate Tall, open stance with smooth load, fluid swing. Has good hands through the ball, and had good pop with wood bat during bp. Stays long and strong through finish producing gap power and 84 mph exit velo off the tee. In the field displayed same smoothness, and was awarded best hands at the event. He was the best defensive player on the field. Has great range, and a quick release at shortstop. Arm velo came in at 84 mph and was accurate. Ran a 7.55 60. Player to follow in 201

Luke Kuberski, OF/RHP, Green Mountain, 2017
Currently ranked No. 6. 6-foot-1, 185-pound outfielder. We have seen Kuberski a lot and love his raw power. He has advanced overall strength with power potential in bat. Offensively hits from a tall now open athletic stance, soft med stride, high hands and back elbow setup. Gets good separation back in load and has explosive bat speed. That was evident with a 96 mph exit velo off the tee. To and through the ball, and upper and lower half work well together. Defensively plays through the baseball, shows athleticism. Ran a 60 in 7.21 seconds.  Arm played well from the outfield with a short over the top slot, with accuracy, at 79 mph which was up 5 mph from last January. On the mound fastball still sits at 76-78 mph from a 3/4 arm slot, simple, effortless repeatable delivery. Gets good extension and is square to plate. 64-65 mph breaking ball showed gradual break, 66-67 mph changeup had a little sink.

James Notary, RHP, Broomfield, 2017
Currently ranked No. 4 and recently committed to TCU. 6-foot-2, 180 pounds. Bats and throws right. Notary was the most dominating pitcher at the event. Was voted best 2017 prospect at the event. Notary has good mechanics with a square, in-line over the top delivery that brings a 85-86 mph fastball to the plate. That was up from 82 mph last January.  Good led drive towards home that produces  good down angle and extension. Curveball was 12-6 shape with good tight spin at 71 mph. Change had some fade at 72. We did notice at times will slow down arm motion to throw both of those pitches. Projects to be a 90 mph thrower, and high prospect to watch.

Nick Perez, 3B, Cherokee Trail, 2017
Currently ranked No. 21. 5-foot-10, 215 pounds. Bats left and throws right. Perez is a strong, stocky 3B. Crouches at the plate with a wide, slightly opened stance. Uses toe-tap stride and generates a level, long swing through the zone with pull power producing 86 mph exit velocity. Gets hands to the ball well on inside pitch. Shows solid fundamentals at 3B and good range to right and left. Threw 73 mph across the infield from short 3/4 arm slot. Ran a 7.5 60. Competes, and is a good instinctive baserunner.

Walker Rumsey, SS/OF, Bear Creek, 2017
Currently ranked No. 14. 5-foot-10, 160 pounds. Bats and throws right. First time we have seen Walker and he impressed. Was one of the top athletes at the event, and received the most athletic player award at event. At the plate stands tall with open stance, medium stride. Line-drive gap hitter. Good hands to the ball. Gets off balance a little at times. Bat speed was 84 mph off the tee. Can play Infield or outfield. Arm velocity is 84 mph from both positions. Attacks the ball with good fundamentals. Very impressed with his running. Ran a 6.89 60, one of the top times at the event. Player to follow in 2017.

Mason Speirs, C/RHP, Broomfield High School, 2017,
Currently ranked No. 29. 5-foot-11, 195 pounds. Speirs is strong player. Has a slight open stance and creates rythm with a leg kick, and got rid of his toe-tap since last time we saw him. Has good extension through the ball with a slight uphill swing that generates some pull power. Behind the dish showcases soft hands while framing. Pop time off the pitcher was 2.06. Very vocal and shows leadership on the field.  Also pitches and threw well at the event. Primarily from the stretch, Speirs showcased a fastball that topped out at 84, but lived consistently at 82-83. Falls off to first, and sometimes is off balance after finish. Projects as an upper 80's kids by the time he's a senior. Has a long loose high 3/4 arm slot. A 67-68 mph curve and 68-70 mph change round out his pitches. Solid player on the mound and behind the plate.

Jordan Stubbings, 3B, Legend, 2017
Currently ranked No. 37. 6-foot-1, 195-pound, right-handed 3B/1B, hits from a tall balanced stance.  A long stride allows for good weight transfer and for contact to be made while on his front side.  A level swing plane and quick hands produced an 88 MPH exit velocity and he showed good power to both gaps.  Good feet and shoulders had the ball in the throwing window quickly with an arm velocity of 72 MPH.  He ran an 8.10 60.
