NorCal Player of the Week: Jake Downing

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA - The top teams in the region and state are starting to emerge and separate themselves as potential contenders. Serra HS (San Mateo) is one of the most traditionally successful programs in the ultra competitive WCAL each year and look to be contenders again in 2023. They are off to a 4-0 start and entered our Power 25 this week at #24. A big reason for their success thus far has been the hitting of 2024 MIF Jake Downing. Jake is a past participant at The Future Games and we will also see him this June at the ProCase in Northern California.

After a big week at the plate, upon nomination from his coach, we have selected junior MIF Jake Downing of Serra High School as the NorCal Player of the Week for the week of March 6-11.

Downing, left-hand hitting signee with the Cal Poly Mustangs, was impactful in both games for the Padres last week. He went 2-for-2 (HR, 2 BB, R, RBI) vs Los Gatos in a 9-8 win and then against Bishop O'Dowd he went off, going 3-for-4 (HR, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 3 R) as Serra won 10-1. This week conference play starts in the WCAL, with Serra and a talented Bellarmine team squaring off on Tuesday, followed by stiff tests for the Padres vs a strong St. Ignatius team on Thursday and #19 Archbishop Mitty on Saturday.

Coaches, do you have a Player of the Week or top performer you'd like to nominate? Be sure to check your email in-box each Sunday. Simply send weekly details/stats into our scouting staff by Monday and look for our Diamond Notes article that will highlight top performers who weren't selected for Player of the Week but are deserving of recognition.

The more information you give us, the better... name, position, grad year, B/T, height/weight, college commitment (if applicable), along with the weekly stats. Please also include anything notable, such as the caliber of competition the player faced, the game circumstances that were affected, etc.
