Game Notes (CA): Vacaville v Acalanes (4/10/19)
April 23, 2019
Lafayette, CA - When two of the top teams in the Power 25 meetup, you know there’s going to be talent on the field and this game between Vacaville and Acalanes showed two very talented teams on 4/10/19. Here are notes on 11 players including 7 Uncommitted and 6 Ranked players across the 2019-2021 classes.
Game Notes:
Acalanes got on the board in the 1st inning when leadoff man 2021 SS Davis Diaz walked getting to 2nd on a balk. Diaz proceeded to steal 3rd and was driven in on a 1B by 2020 DH Nick Kresnak. The Dons looked like they were going to add more with runners at 2nd and 3rd and 1 out, but left the runners stranded. That would be all the offense as Vacaville 2019 RHP Brandon Chalk switched up his sequences and only allowed 3 hits the rest of his 5 innings. Vacaville had a chance to get runs in the 2nd but left the bases loaded. In the 3rd their offense clicked collecting 3 straight hits before an intentional walk and another hit could make it a 3-1 game. That would be all the offense for both teams as Acalanes 2021 RHP Michael Castelli went the rest of the way only giving up 2 hits. Vacaville closed out the last two innings with 2019 RHP Devereaux Harrison and took home a 3-1 victory.
Player Notes:
2021 C/RHP Thatcher Hurd (Acalanes) - UCSB commit. 23rd player in the CA 2021 Rankings. Long and lean large frame that is adding strength and still has lots of space for more; passes the eye test immediately. Catching skills were on display during the outing with strong receiving and blocking skills and a plus arm behind the bag. Was regularly on the bag with throws in between innings (2.0-2.09 Pop) and just missed a runner in-game (2.09 Pop); really showed his arm strength with a throw from his knee between innings that was on the bag and very quick (2.02 Pop). Wasn’t his best day hitting with two weak pop-ups and a looking K, but the bat still has some projection there.
2020 LHP Logan Hurd (Acalanes) - Loyola Marymount commit (Uncommitted on Game Day). Long, lean framed with build to add to. Started showing a good FB/CHG combination keeping hitters off balanced for the first two innings before catching too much of the plate in the 3rd and being chased. FB 82-84 MPH with life at the plate; was used mainly arm-side during the outing and this led to hitters sitting that zone. CHG 70-73 MPH showing late sink off the FB arm-speed with the ability to have some run and flashing the ability to really pull the string on the pitch; showed excellent feel going to it in any count and multiple times in a row. CB 68-70 MPH with 1/7 shape and depth through the zone; times where it got slurvy breaking through the zone and limited usage.
2019 SS Hunter Dorraugh (Vacaville) - Sac State commit. 199th player in the CA 2019 Rankings. Medium frame with sloped wide shoulders showing very athletic build and actions. Made some really nice plays at SS with quick feet able to cover ground to both sides of him staying low through the ball; arm fits the position with plenty for throws. Big 2B in the 3rd to score a run showing his athletic ability out of the box and around the bag into 2nd base (4.75T). Picked up a 2nd hit late in the game flashing some bat control driving a pitch through the 6 hole.
2019 RHP Brandon Chalk (Vacaville) - Uncommitted. Showed very good command of his pitches and attacked hitters all game from his compact 3/4 release. FB 82-85 MPH using it on both sides of the plate with flashes of run arm-side. Breaking ball was his best pitch using it all day to keep hitters off balance and get swing-and-miss. 65-69 MPH with blends between a flat slider and a biting curveball down through the zone with short actions. 5IP 1R 4H, 4K, 1BB.
2019 C Adam Chadwick (Vacaville) - Uncommitted. Physical frame with wide shoulders and big frame showing athletic ability behind the plate. Blocking and receiving skills were good all game. Arm was fair with a high hand and quick release (2.10-2.15 pop); had Acalanes pick up some stolen bases on him with throws around the bag. Had 2 hits staying focused to the middle of the field from a compact swing.
In Depth Coverage:
2021 SS Davis Diaz (Acalanes) - Uncommitted. 5th player in the CA 2021 Rankings. Medium frame with squared shoulders and high waist has growing strength and space to keep adding strength...
