Boras Classic South: Wednesday Notebook

The sophomore class continued to put its stamp on the Boras Classic on day two as multiple 2020 prospects had strong showings. As a whole, the class looks to have depth and strength with both power arms and elite position players, and could possibly rival that of California’s 2017 class, just last year.

Harvard-Westlake’s dynamic duo of 2020 OF Pete Crow-Armstrong (Harvard-Westlake HS, CA), a Vanderbilt recruit, and 2020 SS Drew Bowser (Harvard-Westlake HS, CA), a Stanford recruit, provided the offensive spark that the Knights needed to take down NHSI campion, Orange Lutheran. Facing fellow 2020 RHP Max Rajcic (Orange Lutheran HS, CA), a UCLA recruit, who sat 88-92 with a tight, firm slurve, the two sluggers provided all the offense that the team would need to deliver a 3-0 victory. Crow-Armstrong promptly lead off the game with a hard ground ball single up the middle on a 90-plus mph fastball, and would score on the next batter as Bowser got a hold of another fastball, and deposited it deep over the left field wall.

Crow-Armstrong has the rare combination of elite skill, athleticism, feel for the game, and perhaps most importantly, desire. He plays the game at full-throttle, yet is never out of control, and is even graceful when prancing around the outfield making plays. His quick hands and loose wrists at the plate allow him to strike the ball firmly, and his feel for the barrel allows him to drive the ball to all fields. His speed and ball skills combined with a plus arm from the outfield make him a strong candidate to be a lockdown center fielder moving forward to higher levels. He finished the day with two singles.

Bowser oozes athleticism and projection at 6-foot-3, 190-pounds, and still looks like he will add a significant amount of strength in the future. He has natural actions at shortstop where he showcases confident hands, and clean footwork while taking efficient routes to ground balls. His strong wrists and quick hands allow him to drive through the ball while remaining balanced throughout the swing. He projects for even more power in the future as he continues filling out.
