Inside Performance Showcase - Top Arms

The annual pro showcase took place this past week at Inside Performance in North Vancouver. This event has always given pro scouts and college teams an early look at some of the top talent BC has to offer. Like in years past this year’s event didn’t disappoint. A number of players have shown that the hard work over the winter is paying off with some serious gains at the plate or on the mound. All of these arms all play in the BC Premier League including a trio from the Langley Blaze organization and one uncommitted 2020 grad from the Coquitlam Reds that shouldn’t stay uncommitted too long after days like this one.

We highlight here 5 of the top arms that stood out on the day.

Eli Saul RHP / 1B / Prince of Wales, BC / 2019

6-foot-5 205-pound RHP Sacramento State Commit from the UBC Thunder of the BCPBL. Recent selection to the junior national team spring training. Saul is definitely one of those guys that passes the eye test as he walks to the mound and on this day he showcased why he is the #1 overall ranked player from the 2019 class of BC. Saul has a loose clean arm with serious whip in front where on this day he showed the high FB at 91mph and was sitting consistently 88-90mph. He mixed in 2 other pitches which he showed good feel for including a developing SL 78-80mph with late 10/4 action which could have some serious swing and miss potential as he grows stronger, and a CH 79-81mph with late ride down in the zone. Saul projects as a potential front line D1 starter and Sac state has themselves a real good commitment. Saul could be a name you see toeing the rubber in pro ball sooner than later as well.

Jack Seward RHP / Charles Best, BC / 2020

6-foot-3 180-pound RHP from the Coquitlam Reds of the BCPBL. Jack was sitting consistently 89-91 mph on the FB out of a mid ¾ slot with late ride on the two seem. A developing SL 76-78mph with late downward that shows real swing and miss movement. Jack also showed a CH 83-84mph that he continues to develop it into a big time pitch. As Jack continues to add to his tall lanky frame he projects as a potential starter at the D1 level. Expect to see some big numbers out of this uncommitted grad at the top of our 2020 list this season as well as some potential looks from the JR national team.

Jacob Davies RHP / 1B / Earl Marriott, BC / 2019

2019 grad 6-foot-3 180-pound RHP Galveston JC commit from the Langley Blaze of the BCPBL. A lot to like from this tall athletic frame as he uses a smooth repeatable delivery from a high ¾ slot with a FB consistently sitting in the 86-89mph range, a late breaking 12/6 CB 71-74mph and a CH 77-78mph that comes from the same slot as his FB with late downward that could be a big pitch as he continues to develop it. A loose arm and still has a lot of room to add to his frame. As he continues to add to strength to his frame Davies projects as a potential D1-D2 arm that should be on a number of scouts radars.

Justin Thorsteinson LHP / 1B / Langley, BC / 2020

6-foot-4 205-pound LHP Oregon State Commit and member of the Langley Blaze of the BCPBL and Canadian Junior National Team. Another one who passes the eye test as he walks into any park. Tall athletic build and has a clean repeatable delivery with a whippy arm from the mid ¾ slot. On this day he showed 3 pitches, a FB 85-87mph (but has been up to 89mph last season), a CH 78-79mph with late fade down and a developing 12/6 CB 68-69mph that tends to come out more 11/5. Already committed to one of the top D1 programs JT continues to see a lot of pro interest with a year before his draft expect a lot from one of the top 2020 prospects in the country.

Ryan Scott RHP / OF / Langley, BC / 2019

6-foot-2 190-pound RHP Sacramento State commit from the Langley Blaze of the BCPBL and recent invite to the junior national team spring training in Florida. Consistent in the zone with a repeatable delivery and a loose arm from a high ¾ slot. Showed a heavy FB 87-89mph, a late breaking 12/6 CB 70-71 mph and a CH 76mph from the same FB slot with late downward that has the potential to be a serious swing and miss pitch. With room to add to his already athletic frame expect this D1 commit to get some interest heading into the June pro draft.
