British Columbia Commitment Insider

Jordan Broatch
Director of Scouting, PBR British Columbia

As the new season is upon us and with the recent surge of players committing to college south of the border, we take a quick look at five guys who recently signed this winter looking to make an immediate impact when they step on campus.

Reece Usselman LHP / Langley Secondary, BC / 2022

University of Oregon
A highly projectable left-handed arm coming out of the Langley Blaze program is Reece Usselman, who has committed to the University of Oregon. A long-levered LHP standing in at 6-foot-3 and 180-pounds shows a strong presence on the mound with a quick arm that has popped up to 90. Reece has shown consistent gains with his physique, and the growth as a pitcher is impressive, with his ability to fill the zone and spin the baseball catch your eye right away.  With continued development, we could be seeing his name again in a few years on a draft watch spotlight.

Hunter MacLeod LHP / Robert Bateman Secondary School, BC / 2022

Rend Lake College
A big left-handed pitcher with long arms and a sturdy lower-half coming out of the Abbotsford Cardinals program, Hunter MacLeod, has committed to Rend Lake College, a member of the Great Rivers Athletic Conference, is a Junior College in Illinois. Hunter features a high three-quarter slot with a riding fastball in the low 80s and a slider and changeup combo for a laterally-focused approach to attacking hitters with movement in multiple directions.

Daniel Orfaly RHP / OF / Elgin Park , BC / 2022

University of British Columbia
The last time we saw Daniel was at the Tritons Scout Day in 2021, and boy did he flash some skills and open some eyes. As one Triton coach said, “hardest worker, day in and day out, hands down,” and the proof was easy to see. Daniel showed bat speed with an athletic swing and clean movements with backspin-driven liners to both gaps. Not done there, Orfaly jumped on the bump and showed two-way potential as he worked in the mid 80’s on the mound with a free and easy delivery. UBC snagged itself as a prospect that will put its heart into the team.

Aidan Malish OF / 1B / Kelowna Secondary, BC / 2022

Cloud County CC
Coming out of the Okanagan Athletics  is a powerful OF/1B who holds multiple impressive tools, Aidan Malish. When we saw him at the BC Open ID, Aidan was the fastest runner, hardest hitter, and the highest velocity of all positions players. Skills that every college program desires but rarely finds all together. Malish has an opportunity to produce in a tough conference within a strong program at Cloud County.

Jakob Poturnak SS / 3B / International School Manila, BC / 2022

Xavier University
A new face to the region, Jakob Poturnak, has shown an impressive skill set in a short period to skyrocket up our 2022 Rankings. An excellent all-around player, defensively, he has a set of slick hands and a quick release, which is complemented well by smooth feet and rhythm with his movements to the ball. Poturnak shows control and explosiveness in the box as his swing syncs well through the footstrike into extension. The bat is going to  be the carrying tool with Poturnak and expect him to tap into some real power this summer and has the skills to be in conversation as the top bat in the country. Jakob Poturnak could be a name we talk about for a long time.
