Best of the West Quick Hits
May 13, 2022
Last week our staff got a look at some of the top players on the West Coast, as well as others across the country. With some of the top teams west of Saskatchewan, we got a look at a handful of 2022 MLB Draft prospects, as well as some exciting 2023s and some intriguing 2024s who we expect to hear plenty from going forward.
Below, we begin to take a look at some of the standouts from last week in Kamloops. We start things off with the standouts from the B.C. squads.
2023 C/OF Kenny Scott - Delta Blue Jays (Uncommitted)
Scott may have seen his stock rise the most at Best of the West, going from a hidden gem in B.C. to a name that could make national attention over the next two years for his catching skills. A little undersized right now at 5-foot-9, 160-pounds but he handled a high-powered Delta pitching staff well throughout the week. It’s a quick catch-and-throw with arm strength. Gap-to-gap hitter from the right-side who came through with a few base knocks throughout the week.
UC ‘23 Kenny Scott has jumped onto the map this week w/ his catching skills and arm strength.

2022 INF Nathan Kirkpatrick - Langley Blaze (St. Marys)
This was our second extended look at Kirkpatrick this year and his right-handed bat has shown up from start to finish, both times. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound shortstop has been consistently driving the ball for extra-bases against high-level competition. While it’s not flashy, he makes the plays on the left side of the diamond. Kirkpatrick is set to join St. Marys this fall and early on in 2022, his bat has shown it’s ready for the Division I level.

Every time our staff has seen Kirkpatrick, he’s made hard contact and he does it again, taking this up/in fastball to left for a single.@2NKirkpatrick || @Langleyblaze pic.twitter.com/WQeRP3mv4O
2022 SS Tyrus Hall - Victoria Eagles (Uncommitted)
Hall is one of the top uncommitted players in the country and he seemed to provide us with an exciting moment every single game. In pool play we saw several highlight reel plays up the middle from Hall and then in the first elimination game, he blasted a home run along with a triple. An exciting athlete at the shortstop position who had several chances to flash his arm strength this past week. Currently with the Junior National Team in the Dominican Republic, it will be interesting to see where Hall commits over the next few months.
UC ‘22 Tyrus Hall hits a moonshot of a a HR to extend the @VictoriaEagles lead to 3-0!?

Hall has been a standout with the glove + defending all week and he comes through with the bat right here.
Also, he’s still uncommitted.?@TyrusMHall || @prepbaseball #BCoast?? pic.twitter.com/JkKhDAPsb0
2022 RHP/UTL Ryan Heppner - Delta Blue Jays (UBC)
Heppner made a pair of appearances in Kamloops last week and his first saw him go 1-2-3 for the save, sitting 88-89 with the fastball. His second time out he got the start and was dominant again, sitting 88-90 this time and dominating with a fastball/curveball combination. There was plenty of swing and miss on both pitches and he was comfortable with the curveball in any count at 74-76mph. Up tempo, works quick and attacks hitters. Flashed a few changeups later in his outing. Heppner was productive on the mound and is an overall athlete, looking the part defensively and at the plate as well.
‘22 RHP Ryan Heppner (@ubc_baseball) continues to flash a good two-pitch mix this week.

Four strikeouts through two innings, getting swings/misses on both the FB + CB.
Up-tempo, works quick and attacks hitters.

2022 RHP/OF Oliver Mabee - Victoria Eagles (Uncommitted)
Mabee was another player at Best of the West who is hard to believe they’re still uncommitted. 6-foot-6, 210-pound right-hander who sat 85-86 and stymied a good looking Ontario Blue Jays lineup with some good offspeed and the ability to work around the zone. Mabee also stood out throughout the week with his power potential from the right-side, hitting several doubles for the Victoria squad that fell in the championship. Mabee is a two-way player who shouldn’t be uncommitted for much longer.
‘22 Oliver Mabee (@Oliver_Mabee) is an intriguing uncommitted arm college coaches need to be on.

6-6, 210lbs, works downhill and he’s been tough on LHH’s today. Two-way player from Victoria.

2022 RHP/UTL Everett Swaim - Delta Blue Jays (Uncommitted)
Swaim took the mound on Day 1 in Kamloops and created some buzz with a fastball that sat 85-87 and the size is intriguing on the mound as well, at 6-foot-3, 195-pounds. He’s another Delta product who came into the tournament somewhat unknown and created a name for himself. The right-hander pounds the strike zone and showed the ability to spin the curve. Swaim hasn’t been playing baseball as long as his counterparts, meaning there could be much more in the tank for the Delta product.
UC 2022 Everett Swaim takes the mound for Delta. 6-3, 195 with fluid actions, lots of strikes, can spin it.
