The 2022 West Coast Games are underway! The West Coast Games is an invite-only game play event located in Las Vegas Nevada at UNLV and CSN. Day 1 includes a pro-style workout, followed by 2 days of game play (3 games). In August of 2021, the first ever West Coast Games were held, and in just a year, the event has grown to be one of the most desired events for uncommitted incoming seniors.

The West Coast Games Scout Blog will be updated each day to provide coverage and scouting notes on Future Game participants.

 

(aug 14, game 3 vs utah)

 

Cannon Peery 1B / 3B / Mountain Ridge, AZ / 2023

Cannon Peery opened some eyes throughout the whole week at West Coast Games. His physical build at 6'3 210 on the corners is intriguing. And the bat speed showed to be there as well. Each at bat, Peery was getting his swings off, and up until game 3, we were waiting for him to run into one. In game 3 vs Utah, Peery got that swing off and did not miss it this time, as he deposited a deep 3 run home run over the left center field wall. He then followed up the HR with a 95 mph line drive back up the box for a single. With added athleticism at a corner infield spot, Peery showed the bat can play at a high level with some serious power potential. 

Jake Romaine OF / RHP / Desert Vista, AZ / 2023

Potential two-way prospect Jake Romaine was one of the stand out players in Game 3 of the WCG’s going 2-3 with 2 2Bs. Romaine demonstrated his ability to use both sides of the field hitting a double to the pull side beating the right fielder, and a line drive down the left field line. Romaine showed a balanced lower half at the plate with a short stride putting himself in a good position to hit. On the mound Romaine sat 83-85 topping 86 while going 3in, allowing 2 runs, and forcing weak contact. Romaine’s FB spin was 2100-2200 and a Curveball spin of 2100-2200.

David Galindo RHP / 3B / Saint Mary's, AZ / 2023

Two-sport athlete (QB), David Galindo made a three inning start vs Team Utah in game 3 on Sunday. Galindo has shown all year that he can command the baseball and win games with above average pitch-ability. The arm action is very short and repeatable, as he sat 85-87 and topped 88 through his 3 innings of work. Not Galindo's best outing of his career, he left some balls up that resulted in knocks, but we again were able to see him change speeds and command the strike zone. Strike thrower of three pitches who's success rides on the location of his pitches, and keeping hitters off balanced. SL was 72-74 with 2300 spin rate. Although the FB will sit 85-87, the ball has some life to it with a max of 20.1 IVB and proved it can get on some hitters.

 

Additional Standouts:

MIF Cooper Brass was one of Team Arizona's bright spots on the week. A quality at bat is the expectation each time he steps in the box. With a high rate of contact, low strike out rate, and speed on the base paths, Brass showed he is a great uncommitted follow through his senior campaign.

 

MIF/RHP Lius Romero recorded 3 hits on the week and made a 2 inning appearance on the mound. He topped 86 mph with the FB and has quiet actions in the box. Inside path the the baseball allows high % of contact with whole field approach. 

 

 

(Aug 13, game 2 vs pnw)

 

Cristian Mogen 3B / RHP / Centennial , AZ / 2023

Following a two hit game in game 1 vs Colorado, we mentioned our excitement to see Mogen's appearance on the mound. He did not disappoint. Mogen went 3 innings and did not allow a baserunner until his 7th batter faced. He sat 88-90 with the FB and topped at 91. He was changing speeds well with a CB that showed some promise, and was commanded very well (70% strikes). The spin numbers were also a standout, he spun the FB at 2500 and the CB at 2700. He showed some swing and miss stuff and pitched with confidence and intent. He also recorded his 3rd double on the day at the plate in game 2. Cristian Mogen is a true potential two-way prospect following his performance out at the West Coast Games.

Hunter Flores 3B / 2B / Chandler , AZ / 2023

Interesting Follow in Hunter Flores out of Chandler HS. Friday morning during the workout Flores was one of team AZ’s most intriguing prospects displaying a flat, balanced swing that sprayed balls to both sides of the field avg a 91 ev that maxed out at 96 but been up to 98 in previous events. In the field Flores showed good actions and an accurate arm acrost. Flores hit a double off the wall against a good Pacific NorthWest team Saturday night. While showing some pop in the bat, however there was some concern with swing and miss throughout the weekend.Going back to the ‘23 Top Prospect Games at Central AZ Community College Flores showed his strength at the plate beating a left fielder on a ball to the wall.

 

Additional Standouts:

SS Kevin Ramos led off the game with a smooth swing that resulted in a double. Ramos plays the game at a controlled pace with a clean glove on the left side. Projects as middle infielder, best at 2B.

 

CIF/C Tyler Clementz continues to show he comes up big in RBI spots. Two hits on the weekend that brought in a run both times. Simple approach at the plate with great bat to ball skills.

 

(Aug 13, Game 1 vs Colorado)

 

Cooper Brass SS / 2B / Hamilton, AZ / 2023

Cooper Brass had an intriguing workout on Friday, day 1 of the West Coast Games. Smaller build with above average athleticism and quick twitch actions. Have clocked him at a 6.75 60 in past workouts. The bat path is efficient to the baseball and produces line drive contact to all parts of the field. Projects best as a 2B at the top/bottom of the order. In game 1 vs Colorado, Brass turned in 3 quality at bats with hard contact in as many plate appearances. In the leadoff spot, Brass drove a triple to deep right center, where he showed his speed around the bases. In his second at bat he lined out hard to 2B vs a very quality arm. And in his 3rd plate appearance he reached base safely with a knock through the 6-hole. Defense was also on display in this matchup, with several quality plays that showed his range and athleticism. Brass has shown over the last two days that he remains as one of the top uncommitted infielders in the 23 class.

Landon Springmeyer C / 1B / Corona Del Sol, AZ / 2023

Uncommitted 2023 catcher Landon Springmeyer is off to a great start at the West Coast Games through the first 2 days. He turned in a great workout on day 1, taking arguably Team Arizona's best BP round, driving low line drives to all parts of the field, and the ball was coming off the bat great. Springmeyer recorded a 103 mph EV, with an average EV in the mid 90s. He threw the ball well to 2B from the catcher position, recording a 1.95 pop time with carry on the ball to 2B. In game 1 vs Colorado, Springmeyer connected with 2 swings, one resulting in a double that beat the right fielder over his head, and a hard one hop ground out to 2B. His swing is build for line drives and covers the zone well. Defensively, Springmeyer is a great leader behind the plate with high baseball IQ. Receiving is simple and he's consistently in a position to block. From the knees, Springmeyer back picked a base runner at 1B. Current #6 ranked catcher in the 2023 class and making a case to move forward.

Michael Caruso RHP / RHP / Desert Vista, AZ / 2023

Michael Caruso started game 1 on the mound for Team Arizona vs Colorado. Caruso has been an interesting follow over the last year as he really started to blossom on the mound. Moves well with an athletic delivery, and fills up the zone with 3 pitches, the CH being his out pitch. In his 3 inning start, Caruso hit a personal best 90 mph with the FB. Was very efficient in the zone and showed he can change speeds. FB has -15" of HM and was getting in on hitters hands. Breaking ball has a slurvy break to it and commanded well in this outing. The CH plays 8-9 mph off the FB and is used in all counts. Caruso continues to move in the right direction and is a great uncommitted follow going into his senior season.

Cristian Mogen 3B / RHP / Centennial , AZ / 2023

Crisitan Mogen is coming off a very impressive 2022 spring season, where he hit .500+ with a high rate of XBH. He has been a highly anticipated participant for the West Coast Games, and through the workout and game 1 he has not disappointed. Took a very clean BP and showed some ability on the left side of the infield. In game 1, Mogen went 2-3 with 2 RBI 2Bs to the deep right center field gap. He does a great job staying balanced and keeping his direction through center field. There's some power potential in the bat with added strength. Going into game 2, we're very excited to see what Mogen has to offer of the mound as a potential two-way prospect.
