Q&A with Ethan Hott
December 7, 2021
The recruiting process is something that varies from athlete to athlete. Each player is going to go down their own path, on their own timeline. There is no right way to navigate through the process. Players often attend camps/showcases, take calls with coaches, are seen during spring/summer competition, all to achieve that goal of playing at the next level.
Since every athlete's recruiting experience is different, we want to shine some light on a few different prospects from the 2022 class who are willing to share their experiences with us. Today, we will be looking deeper into OF Ethan Hott (Chaparral, 2022) recruiting and on field experiences up to this point.

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? Was it as expected? Easy/Difficult?
Hott: "I really did not know what to expect going into the recruiting process since I started talking to schools so early. I was fortunate enough to have a pretty smooth and quick process but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t stressful at times. If you work hard I believe that in the end it will all work itself out."
PBR: What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career at?
Hott: "I have always been a pretty high academic kid so I really wanted to go somewhere where I would not only be challenged on the field, but in the classroom as well. Stanford is one of the most elite in the country in both baseball and academics."
PBR: Did location or distance from home play a factor in your decision?
Hott: "Not really. While being recruited I was looking at schools in both the east and west coast. I’m glad I ended up at a place relatively close to home, though."
PBR: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you? Was there a particular game or event that you feel turned the corner for you?
Hott: "I attended the PBR Future Games in Georgia the summer going into my sophomore year and was able to show really well. That is when communication began with most of the schools I was taking to. It really ramped up quickly after that event for me."
PBR: Where did the college you chose first see you? How did your relationship develop with them?
Hott: "Stanford first saw me at the Future Games and they reached out shortly after. They asked me to attend a camp on campus a few weeks later and that is when I was offered.
PBR: What do you like most about the college you committed to and what were the key factors in making your decision?
Hott: "The campus is beautiful, the people are amazing, and the academics are top notch. Not to mention their baseball program is highly competitive every year too. These were all reasons why I knew Stanford was the right place for me."
PBR: At what point in your career did you realize you were a college caliber player and became serious about taking your game to the next level?
Hott: "I knew that I was a highly competitive player from a really young age but it wasn’t until I reached high school, and a few schools starting reaching out, that I realized that playing at a Division 1 school was a possibility."
PBR: What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?
Hott: "Always be the hardest worker in the room. There is no excuse for not putting the work in. Don’t worry about the things you can’t control. I know the recruiting process can be discouraging at times but it is important to maintain a perspective and know that your hard work does not go unnoticed."
PBR: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?
Hott: "Committing to Stanford University is definitely the most memorable moment in my baseball career thus far. It’s an awesome feeling knowing your hard work is paying off but it is also a source of motivation to continue upping my game."
PBR: Preview your high school season for us. How do you feel your team will be? What are your expectations and goals?
Hott: "I’m pumped for this season. We have a great group of guys who love to compete. Obviously the goal is to win state and I feel like we can do it. We need to take it one game at a time and not lose sight of what’s most important during the long season. I’m looking forward to getting my senior season started!"
PBR: Where do you play in the summer? And what has been your most memorable experience with them?
Hott: "I’ve played with a few different club teams throughout high school. I spent most of my time, however, with AZ Sandlot and Artillery Scout Team. I can’t think of one specific event that was most memorable, but I have had some of the best experiences over the summer playing with great teams and great people. The guys I’ve played club ball with growing up are still some of my closest friends today.”
