Arizona 2023 Rankings Updated

As of today, The PBR Arizona- Class of 2023 Player Rankings has had its end of the summer update. Ever since the AIA season shut down early, PBR put its focus on the players, highlighting & covering as many prospects as possible in some instances in whatever ways possible. There were many question marks out there as to how this sketchy situation would affect the players in reference to  recruiting as well as playing in the summer & fall. Many schools weren't able to get out on the recruiting trail for quite some time. Presently, DI schools are still shutdown from going out to recruit uncommitted players. One of PBR's areas of focus has been to highlight as many uncommitted prospects as possible through our online platform so college coaches could still recruit this class over the last several months. Over the summer, PBR Arizona finally had a chance to hold a couple of events including our 2023 Top Prospect Games as well as our Summer Review where we could identify potential prospects. Our scouting staff also spent many hours covering outside game & tournament action. From this coverage, our scouting staff was able to see many prospects who were able reap the benefits from some extra time off this spring and summer. The summer did look and feel a bit different, but some players found clever ways not just to stay in shape, but also to get stronger and hone their skills for when they eventually got back on the field. 

As we transition into the fall season, PBR will once again be out in full force to see the progress players have made. We recently came out with its 2023 National Rankings with some big prospects from the state making the list. There will be plenty of updates to this list in the future.

Four Pitchers rise into our National rankings

Arizona had four pitchers make significant jumps in our state rankings during this update. They also put themselves in the national spotlight for their performance this past summer. 

RHP Connor Mattison (Canyon View) has been on the rise since the beginning of spring as well as standing out at this year's PBR Future Games for Team Arizona. He shows a quick arm with an athletic projectable body. Worked his FB up to 89mph for Team Arizona as well as showing a breaking ball with above average potential. We were able to see him recently at the Sophomore classic where he again showed some of the same upside as he did in Georgia.

 

We haven't seen a ton of LHP Bradyn Barnes (Highland), Arizona State commit since we last saw him in early spring before the season was shut down. However, we have been following his progress while seeing he has made some big strides on the mound as far as mechanics goes. He arguably has the cleanest arm and most upside out of any arm in the 2023 class in Arizona. Currently, his velocity only hovers in the low 80's but expect him to make some jumps in the near future especially as he starts to mature more physically. 

 

LHP Justin Chambers (Highley) attended our 2022 Top Prospect Games this past summer where he arguably had the best pitching performance on the mound of the day. From a long tall frame with athleticism, he sat 81-84mph with his FB, while mixing in a SL that came in from a deceiving higher slot with sharp break. We have also seen recently that he been sitting more in the 84-85mph range with some big pitching performances for Sandlot baseball this past summer.

 

RHP Derek Schaefer (Cactus Shadows) might have made the most improvements recently while continuing to rise on our board. We were able to see him start for the Scottsdale Dirtbags last week. It wasn't his best outing from a command stand point but he showed an uptick in his overall stuff. He sat 86-89mph early in his start with downhill tilt. We had previously only seen him touching 87mph. He mixed in two solid secondary pitches, making for 3 quality pitches. Threw his CV at 72-74mph with some swing & miss potential at 2450rpm. Also mixed in a CH that he can throw a bit more in the future at 78mph to the arm side. Schaefer's ultra projectable body & athleticism should continue to help him develop more in the future.  

 

Tiedemann Jumps into the Top-10

2023 SS/RHP Joshua Tiedemann (Hamilton) is one of the better all-around athletes in the class at 6-foot-1 170-pounds with a lean athletic frame and above average strength. He is another player that came to Georgia with us this past summer to play on Team Arizona for the PBR Future Games. His advanced overall tools stand out or the age group. Tiedemann is a right-handed hitter that uses the whole field. Feel for the barrel with hard contact & power potential. He is a versatile defender that can play anywhere on the field with a naturally strong arm and athletic footwork. He also shows us some two-way potential currently with a FB in the 84-86mph range with low effort. Look for Tiedemann to make jumps into the future as he adds more intent to his advanced tools. There is significant upside here.
