The North Arkansas Prospect Identification Showcase was hosted at University of Arkansas Fort Smith. The event contained several solid prospects from various locations across the state of Arkansas. Here is a look at some of the top performers.
Pitcher
Carter Brown, 2016, RHP/OF Bentonville HS
Brown is a 6-foot-1 190 pound right hander with a large-frame and average build. He worked from an H ¾ arm slot with a quick clean arm. He repeated his mechanics with some effort. He commanded the strike zone with 3 pitches. He threw his fastball 84-86 with slight sink. His curveball was thrown 70-71 mph with gradual break, but was thrown for strikes. He commanded the change up, throwing the pitch with near fastball arm speed and arm side run at 73-76 mph. Overall Brown has a strong arm with a feel to pitch, in his defensive work he registered a 90 mph throwing from the outfield. I believe with some mechanically fixes he will throw harder, and be a solid pitcher at the collegiate level.
Jackson Sloan, 2017, RHP, Fayetteville HS
Sloan is a 6-foot-2 165 right-hander with a medium-frame and an athletic build. He has a loose arm working from a ¾ arm slot. He repeats his mechanics and rhythm allowing him to command the strike zone on a consistent basis. His fastball was 82-84 mph. He threw his curveball with near fast ball at 67-70 mph with gradual break. The change-up is a more advanced pitch thrown a 73-75 mph with arm-side run. Overall Sloan has an arm that projects harder and a feel to pitch for a player his age. He is a player to watch over the next year as he should receive more mound time in 2016.
Catcher
Quinn Cherry, 2017, C, Harrison HS
Cherry is a 6-foot-2 170-pound C/OF with a large frame and an athletic build. He impressed with his bat spraying balls to all fields with a compact swing. He attacked the baseball with fast bat speed generating exit speeds up to 91 mph. Defensively he has a strong accurate arm. He threw a 1.97, 2.06, and 2.17. He throw times will be more consistent as he shortens his elongated exchange. He receives the ball with soft hands and maintains good arm angles. Overall Cherry is a physically gifted player that as he refines his tools, he will become a good collegiate player.
Infielder
Hayes Cox, 2017, MIF Fayetteville HS
Cox is a 5-foot-10 160-pound middle infielder with a medium frame and an average build. He was impressive during the defensive evaluation portion of the day. He displayed fluid footwork, and soft hands as he played through the baseball. He as flashed a quick exchange with a strong accurate arm throwing the ball 84 mph. Offensively he has a short inside out swing that allowed him to hit the ball the other way on a consistent basis. Overall Cox is a good young player, as he adds strength he should turn into one of the better players in his class.
Outfielder
Jared Dawson, 2016, OF Dardanelle HS
Dawson is a 6-foot-2 175-pound OF with a large frame and an athletic build. He posted the best 60 time in the event running a 6.80 in the 60. He worked through the baseball, with a fluid exchange and an accurate arm. He registered 81 mph throwing from the outfield. Offensively he showed a short line drive swing that consistently found barrel with. He produced exit velocities up to 84 mph. Overall Dawson is a good athlete with a sound swing, as he add strength he will be a sound player at the next level.
