EXCLUSIVE LOOK: Fall Prospect League Post Season Awards

By: Zac Bottoms
Arkansas Scouting Director

Sunday, November 8th wrapped up our Fall Prospect Program. The league gave 50 players the opportunity to compete at Southern Arkansas University, Arkansas Tech University, University of Arkansas Monticello, University of Arkansas Fort Smith, and Henderson State University. The league was very competitive with several close games and some quality players throughout each team. Over the next few weeks I will be getting out reports on every player that participated, but today we want to give you an exclusive look at some of our top performers and hand out some awards.

Pitcher of the Year

2016 LHP Gunner Gilbert, Shiloh Christian HS

Gilbert is a 5-foot-11 170-pound left-hander with an athletic frame and build. He pitches from an H ¾ arm slot with a clean quick arm. He has a repeatable delivery. Mechanically he maintains balance and rhythm throughout. He pounded the strike zone with a fastball of 77-80 mph with late life. He used his 1/7 curveball do strike out hitters. He threw his curveball at 67-70 mph with late sharp break. Striking out batters was a regular occurrence for Gilbert as he punched out 18 hitters in 8 innings of work. Overall Gilbert is an athletic left-hander with a feel to pitch. His curveball is good enough he could be used as a left-handed specialist early in his college career.

Hitter of the Year

2017 C/OF Quinn Cherry, Harrison HS

Cherry is a 6-foot-2 190-pound catcher outfielder with a large frame and a physical build. He showed the ability to square balls up on a consistent basis. He drove the ball to all fields for extra base hits. Mechanically he starts from a tall stance with a smooth load, he uses a short stride. He stays balanced through his swing attacking the baseball with fast bat speed and a slight uphill bat path. Defensively he has a strong arm. He shows good effort behind the plate and still learning the small nuances of catching. Overall Cherry is a physical player with an advanced offensive game, he could develop into a solid catcher as of right now I project him to play outfield at the next level with no issues due to his athleticism.

Rookie of the Year

2019 Alex Cauley, North Little Rock HS

Cauley is a 5-foot-9 155-pound athlete with an athletic frame and build. He showed the ability to do it all over the 5 week league. He played a solid short stop, playing through the baseball with fluid footwork a clean exchange and an accurate arm. He showed above average range in the outfield covering balls in the gap, with an accurate arm. Offensively he starts from an athletic stance, he has a smooth load and short stride. He shows fast bat speed with line drive swing that keeps the barrel in the hit zone for an extended period of time. This allowed him to hit in games consistently each week. On the mound he was effective as well pounding the strike zone with a fastball of 75-78 mph with some run. He complimented the fastball with a breaking thrown with near fastball arm speed at 62-65 mph. Overall Cauley is an above athlete that understands how to play the game. He will be a player to watch over the next 3 years as he gets stronger.
