The Alabama Diamond Notes will focus on highlighting some top performances across the state based on nominations from high school coaches. We will highlight positions players, pitchers and two-way players every Wednesday of the high school season that had impressive weeks during their team's games. Special thank you to the many high school coaches that sent in nominations this week. These stats are for games played between April 8th-13th.

 

Let's check out some of the top performances from Week 8 of the 2024 high school season.

 

Hayden Markfort OF / James Clemens, AL / 2024 Markfort was 4-7 (.571) last week with a run driven in and three runs scored. He also stole three bases and ended the week with an OBP of .635 for the 7A No. 10 Jets.

Satchel Wheeler LHP / 1B / James Clemens, AL / 2024 The Snead State recruit was 1-0 on the mound last week tossing five innings during the week. He allowed two hits and only walked one while not allowing a run. He struck out five as opposing hitters hit only .125 against him. Wheeler was also 1-2 (.500) with the bat.

David Sharp OF / RHP / James Clemens, AL / 2024 The uncommitted senior continues to put together a solid year for the Jets as he was 4-8 (.500) a week ago with a double and a run driven in. He also was hit-by-pitch once and scored three runs.

Daniel Askew 2B / SS / Russellville High School, AL / 2024 Another quality uncommitted senior, Askew was 8-10 (.800) for the 5A No. 6 Golden Tigers. He doubled twice and scored eight runs while also driving in eight runs as well.

Kaden Moore OF / 3B / North Sand Mountain School, AL / 2024 Moore, an uncommitted senior, was 11-16 (.688) last week with four doubles. He also drove in nine runs and finished the week with an OBP of .706.

Luke Holbrook RHP / 3B / Whitesburg Christian , AL / 2025 The uncommitted junior enjoyed a solid week for the 2A No. 8 Warriors as he was 6-10 (.600) with two homeruns and two doubles while driving in five runs. On the mound he went 1-0 with a save (7 total IP) as he allowed only one earned run and struck out nine opposing hitters.

Keegan Giles SS / 2B / Leroy High School, AL / 2026 Giles, an uncommitted sophomore, was 6-12 (.500) last week for 1A No. 7 Leroy. He drove in four runs and scored five additional runs. He also stole four bases and finished the week with a .647 OBP.

Evan Brazelton OF / OF / Arab , AL / 2025 The uncommitted junior was 4-7 (.571) last week for the Knights as they locked up an area title. Brazelton had a double and drove in three runs. He also scored two runs.

Jack Elliott SS / 2B / Athens , AL / 2024 Yet another quality uncommitted senior on the list this week, Elliott was 4-8 (.500) with a double and three runs driven in for the Golden Eagles. He also scored five runs and stole five bases.

Drew Layfield / Ashville High School, AL / 2024 The uncommitted senior was 8-15 (.533) last week with three doubles and a homerun. He drove in nine runs and added a stolen base. On the mound he was 2-0 as he tossed ten innings and did not walk anyone while striking out 16.

Dylan Palmer C / RHP / Ashville , AL / 2026 The sophomore catcher was 8-13 (.615) with two doubles and two triples a week ago. He finished with four runs driven in, walked six times and stole six bases.

Miles Edwards RHP / SS / Lauderdale County, AL / 2024 The Wallace-Hanceville CC recruit was 6-8 (.750) last week for the 3A No. 1 Tigers. He had two doubles, drove in six runs and scored three additional runs. On the mound, Edwards was 1-0 with 4.2 innings pitched. He allowed only one hit and walked only one. He did not allow a run while striking out 12 opposing hitters.

Joseph Stephens SS / RHP / Gulf Shores, AL / 2024 The Coastal Alabama South CC recruit was 7-10 (.700) last week with a triple and a run driven in. He walked once, stole a base and scored four runs. He finished the week with a .667 OBP.

Judson Harris OF / RHP / Gulf Shores , AL / 2027 The freshman outfielder, who also doubles as QB1 on the Dolphins football state championship team, was 5-8 (.625) last week with two runs driven in and two runs scored. He walked once, stole a base and finished with a .667 OBP.

Jackson Beck OF / RHP / Gulf Shores, AL / 2024 The senior outfielder was 6-11 (.545) last week for the 5A No. 3 Dolphins. He finished with three doubles and three runs driven in. Beck also scored three runs and stole a base.

Colman Gann RHP / OF / Priceville, AL / 2025 Gann, an uncommitted junior, continues to put up impressive numbers as he was 1-0 last week with a seven inning complete-game win. He did not allow an earned while scattering two hits. He walked only one and struck out 18 opposing hitters.

Tyde Borden 3B / RHP / Priceville, AL / 2025 Borden, just like Gann, is an uncommitted junior that continues to put up impressive numbers for the Bulldogs. He earned a complete-game win (5 IP) while only allowing one earned run on four hits. He also struck out ten.

Luke Reed LHP / North Sand Mountain, AL / 2026 The sophomore southpaw went 2-0 last week for the Bisons as he tossed 11 innings of three-hit baseball. He struck out 13 hitters and did not allow an earned run. He finished the week with a .455 WHIP.

Chase Cartron LHP / 1B / Huntsville, AL / 2024 The Troy recruit eventually settled for a no-decision in area contest against Sparkman, but that did not take away from his impressive outing. Cartron tossed seven innings of two-hit baseball and did not allow a run as he struck out six. The Panthers went on to win 1-0 in nine innings.

Tanner Hermesch RHP / 3B / Bob Jones, AL / 2025 Hermesch, an uncommitted junior, continues to give the 7A No. 2 Patriots quality innings on the mound as he hurled a complete-game shutout (7 IP) last week. He allowed only two hits. He did not walk anyone and struck out 12 as opposing hitters only hit .083 against him.

Hudson Marks 1B / Athens, AL / 2026 The uncommitted sophomore was 1-0 last week for the Golden Eagles as they wrapped up an area championship. He earned a complete-game win (7 IP) and did not allow an earned run while scattering four hits. He did not walk anyone and struck out six.

Skylar Tucker 1B / LHP / Lauderdale County, AL / 2025 The uncommitted junior southpaw continues to pitch well for the 3A No. 1 Tigers. A week ago he earned a complete-game win (6 IP) while only allowing one hit. He struck out 12 opposing hitters and did not walk anyone.

Blaze Gerhart RHP / 3B / Sardis, AL / 2024 The Snead State recruit was dominant in his outing of Game 1 of a key area series last week. He tossed a complete-game no-hitter (7 IP) to get the win as he struck out 12 hitters. He also helped his own cause by going 2-4 with a homerun and two runs batted in.

Brady Richardson SS / RHP / Enterprise, AL / 2025 The Troy commit turned in a gem last week for the Wildcats as he went 1-0 in a complete-game (7 IP) shutout. He allowed one hit and did not walk anyone. He struck out 14 as opposing hitters hit only .048 against him.
