Trash Pandas Classic Scout Blog: Catchers

The Trash Pandas Classic was held June 25 at Toyota Field in Madison, Alabama. The first class venue set the stage for a quality event with a morning workout followed by game play in the afternoon. We have already taken a look at the Pitcher Only's from the event and today we will take a look at the catchers that were at the event. Keep checking back over the next few days as we will also look at the infielders and outfielders from the event. Here are the eight catchers:
Tyler Sanderson: C/SS, (2023) Grissom, AL. 6-foot, 165-pound athletic frame. During the event, recorded a 60 time of 7.71. Setup was comprised of a controlled load and open stance. Bat speed was above average, displayed uphill simple swing plane and good extension on his finish. Produced a lot of loud contact and found multiple barrels. Gap to gap approach. Sanderson had a max exit velocity of 84 mph. His best recorded velocity during throw downs was clocked at 71 mph; had sure hands, athletic footwork and a twitchy exchange. A lot of flexibility and athletic setup.Behind the plate, had a pop time of 2.05-2.16. Had a high ¾ slot and a quick arm action. A ton to like in this '23 grad.
Cannon Daversa: C/3B, (2020) Madison County, AL. 6-foot-2, 215-pound physical frame. In the 60-yard dash, his time was 7.58. Starts in an open stance with a compact load, then uses a leg kick to start his swing. Bat speed was explosive, showed uphill swing plane and high finish. Showed loud contact during his round. Pull side approach. the switch hitter showed his power ability with an exit velocity of 89 mph. He recorded a position velocity of 79 mph during throw downs; has a clean exchange and choppy footwork. Staggered setup with some flexibility. While catching, consistently had pop times of 2.07-2.19. Consistent accuracy to the bases, used an-over-the-top slot with a quick arm action. Physical catcher headed to Calhoun Community College in the fall.
Samuel Hogue: C/RHP, (2022) Lindsay Lane Christian Academy, AL. 6-foot-1, 150-pound lean frame. Recorded a time of 7.44 in the 60-yard dash. Starts in an open tall stance with a controlled load, then uses a small leg kick. Bat speed was efficient, had rotational swing plane and high finish. Created some loud contact during his round. Pull side approach. the right-handed hitter displayed an exit velocity of 89 mph, showing his strength and power ability. His best throw downs of the day reached a max velocity of 71 mph; has a clean exchange and consistent footwork. Has narrow setup. Behind the plate, had consistent pop times of 2.13-2.31. Some accuracy to the bag, used an-over-the-top slot with a loose arm action.
Brendan Steder: C/3B, (2022) Westminster Christian, AL. 5-foot-8, 140-pound proportional frame. Recorded a 60 time of 8.44 at the event. Starts in an athletic stance with a smooth load, then uses a controlled stride to start his swing. Has short level swing plane and good extension on his finish. Was able to create some loud contact and found some barrels.Up the middle approach. Steder had a max exit velocity of 74 mph. His best throw downs of the day reached a max velocity of 67 mph; shows consistent footwork and a quick exchange. Athletic setup with some flexibility. Behind the plate, had consistent pop times of 2.13-2.39. Had a consistent arm action and a high ¾ slot with some accuracy to the base.
Bentley Goodwin: C/OF, (2023) Westminster Christian, AL. 5-foot-8, 160-pound proportional frame. In the 60-yard dash, recorded a time of 7.98. Had a controlled load and a short stride. Bat speed was explosive, showed uphill short swing plane and good extension on his finish. In the round he found multiple barrels. Pull side approach. the right-handed hitter had a max exit velocity of 83 mph. He made throws to second at velocities up to 68 mph; has a quick exchange and fluid footwork. Quiet setup with some flexibility. Behind the plate, had consistent pop times of 2.20-2.29. Showed consistent accuracy to the bag with a quick arm action and a high ¾ slot. He continues to make strides each time we see him.
Cooper Phillips: C/3B, (2023) West Limestone, AL. 5-foot-11, 190-pound solid frame. Recorded a 60 time of 7.42 at the event. Sets up in an open stance with a smooth controlled load. Had uphill simple swing plane and good extension on his finish. Found multiple barrels through his round. Pull side approach. Phillips showed his power in the box with a strong exit velocity of 90 mph. He recorded a position velocity of 73 mph during throw downs; had a clean exchange and smooth footwork. Some flexibility and wide setup.While catching, consistently had pop times of 2.22-2.39. Showed consistent accuracy to the bag with a high ¾ slot. Loud bat on this '23 catcher.
Zach Chaney: C/3B, (2023) Priceville, AL. 5-foot-9, 160-pound athletic frame. In the 60-yard dash, recorded a time of 7.87. Started in an open stance with a compact load. Bat speed was efficient, displayed simple loose swing plane and high finish. During the round he showed some loud contact. Pull side approach. the right-handed hitter had an exit velocity of 83 mph. His best recorded throw to second was clocked at 67 mph; had average footwork and a clean exchange. Some flexibility and staggered setup.Behind the plate, recorded a pop time of 2.23-2.27.
Cameron Hearn: C/OF, (2023) Grissom, AL. 5-foot-10, 168-pound solid frame. At the plate, Hearn had an exit velocity of 83 mph. Begins in a tall athletic stance with a small load, then uses a short stride. Has flat swing plane and has level finish. Opposite field approach. Behind the plate, had consistent pop times of 2.25-2.32, his best throw downs of the day reached a max velocity of 68 mph; has smooth footwork and a natural exchange. Has quiet setup. Some accuracy to the bases, used an-over-the-top slot with a compact arm action. During the event, recorded a 60 time of 7.74.
