PBR Future Games: Team Alabama

Austin Sharp
Director of Scouting

After many hours of discussion and deliberation, we are excited to announce Team Alabama that will be heading over to LakePoint Sports in Cartersville, GA and compete in the 2020 PBR Future Games. Many of these players come from PBR showcases and tournaments in the past with most coming from events this summer. We feel like this year's team will be very competitive against the rest of the country.

The 2019 PBR Future Games was the first year that PBR Alabama attended this event, and it was nothing short of spectacular. It is played at the best venue for summer baseball in the country in LakePoint Sports. Last year's Team Alabama featured some very talented and impressive 2021's and 2022's that went over and did more than hold their own. 10 of the 22 players from last year's team are already committed as they head into their senior seasons of high school. You can find these list of commitments below.

  • Trey Burrell (Grambling State)
  • Cole Cheatham (Mississippi State)
  • Dillon Cook (Troy)
  • Trent Hodgdon (West Virginia)
  • Michael Hopkinson (Samford)
  • Carson Howard (North Alabama)
  • Drew Nelson (Auburn)
  • Aidan Stewart (Missouri)
  • Alex Wade (Auburn)
  • Ellis Yohn (Tennessee-Martin)

Beginning with the pro-style workout, some of the members from Team Alabama stood out, including '21 SS Aidan Stewart who posted the top infield velocity (94 mph) at the PBR Future Games. In the first ever game at the PBR Future Games, Team Alabama came out and defeated PBR Florida by a score of 4-1. '21 3B Matthew Omohundro went deep in the early innings and future West Virginia commit '21 RHP Trent Hodgdon was lights out on the mound. Team Alabama would go on to drop their final two games to PBR Georgia and PBR Carolinas in closely contested games. It was an incredible experience for our PBR staff, all players, coaches, and parents.

Fast-forwarding to this summer, we feel like we have assembled a loaded team stocked full of uncommitted talent. It's a very wide variety of players from all over the state of Alabama. We are itching to get back to LakePoint and seeing these talented players get after it.

Catchers

Beginning with our look at the 2020 version of Team Alabama, we want to take a look at the three catchers that are going to be in attendance in just a few short days. These are all high-profile players that can certainly swing the bat and can defend at a very high level. Tucker Stockman will be returning again this summer after a strong performance at last year's Future Games. Let's take a look..

Lucas Steele C / 1B / Hoover, AL / 2022

Got our first look at Steele at last year's Southeast Summer Championships in Hoover, AL and he instantly stood out. Playing up a year on the Excel Blue Wave, Steele showed he had no trouble playing against some high level competition. This switch-hitting catcher handled all of Excel's arms very well behind the plate. The bat was equally as impressive and has seemed to improve more as he has added some notable strength and fill out into his frame. Steele definitely has some power from both sides of the plate. Can also play 1st base as well. Going to be one to watch as the week goes on.

Tucker Stockman C / RHP / Athens, AL / 2022

One of the few returners from last year's PBR Future Games, Stockman has continued to show well at all PBR events over past couple of years. Shows significant strength in the box from the right side and has seen the power come on as of late. Creates some serious bat speed. Solid defensively behind the plate and can easily move to 1st base if needed. Doubles as a quality arm on the mound as the fastball has reached as high as 88 mph.

Walker Zapp C / 3B / Auburn, AL / 2022

Listed at 5-foot-11, 190 pounds, Zapp is a physically imposing prospect with impressive tools across the board. Showcased well at numerous PBR showcases and tournaments over the past year and has really caught the attention of our PBR staff. A top performer at the 2020 Top Prospect Games as he blasted a home run to LF during gameplay. Also stood out statistically at the event, as he posted a 95 mph exit velo, 1.87-1.94 pop times, and also ran a 6.81 laser-timed 60 YD. Elite defender behind the plate. One to watch in the Future Games.

Corner IF's

Moving on to the corner infielders that will be doning the state of Alabama on their jersey, we are excited to see how these players fare at the Future Games. We have gotten a good look at all of these prospects over the last few years at PBR showcases, high school games, and PBR tournaments. All of these corner infielders can hit for power and defend well at their respective positions.

Davis Gillespie SS / RHP / Oak Mountain, AL / 2022

One player in the 2022 class that has really bursted onto the scene in a big way after his performance at the Top Prospect Games in late June. Extra base hit machine from the right side of the plate with a true gap to gap approach. Good defender that has played shortstop but will likely see more action at the hot corner on this team thanks to his 6-foot-2, 185 pound frame. The arm really jumped out on the mound as well at the event, as the fastball reached 90 mph with a  quality secondary arsenal. Could really blow up at this event.

JW Hopkins 1B / RHP / Bob Jones, AL / 2022

A physically imposing corner infielder that uses his strength to his advantage at the dish. His power is probably his best tool with some definite pull side pop. Listed at 6-foot-4, 220 pounds, Hopkins posted one of the best exit velos in PBR Alabama's history at 102 mph a little over a year ago. Creates some explosive bat speed and good extension at contact. Got some significant AB's for a loaded Bob Jones team this past spring.

Jackson Howard 1B / 3B / Daphne, AL / 2022

Got to see Howard this spring down at Daphne HS in a high school game and left very impressed with how the rising junior can swing the bat. Really has seen the power come on as of late, as he has started the summer circuit on fire. Holds down the fort well at 1st base defensively and can also play some 3rd base as well. Expect him to mash some baseballs during the Future Games.

McGwire Turner 3B / SS / Helena, AL / 2022

Last but certainly not least at the corner infield position, Turner comes in off a couple of strong showings at PBR events over the past couple of months. Really filled out his frame over the last year and the power has come on because of it. His BP rounds at the East Coast Sox Scout Day and the Top Prospect Games were very loud. Some definite pull side juice and made all the routine plays during gameplay.

Middle Infielders

The middle infield position of Team Alabama is sure to be one that will impress both at the workout and during gameplay. This group is comprised of two 2022's and two 2023's. All are very athletic with high upside. It is going to be fun to watch them hold down the middle of the infield at the Future Games.

William Burgreen SS / 2B / Decatur, AL / 2022

Burgreen is one that we are very familiar with, as he will be returning again this summer from the last year's Team Alabama. In the past year, you can see some notable strength the switch-hitting middle infielder has added to his frame. He is an excellent runner (6.68 laser-timed 60) with a gap to gap approach from both sides of the dish. Started at shortstop for 6A Decatur HS this year and can also move to 2nd base with no problem.

RJ Hamilton SS / 2B / Hoover, AL / 2023

Got our first look at Hamilton this summer at the East Coast Sox Scout Day and he immediately stood out. There is some definite athleticism to his game, as he ran a 6.69 laser-timed 60 YD at the event. Shows some quick twitch actions both at the plate and up the middle defensively. Possesses some quick hands and some present strength. Rangy defender with a strong arm across the infield. Standout WR on the gridiron for 7A Hoover.

Sam Robertson SS / 2B / Oxford , AL / 2023

One of the few 2023's on Team Alabama this summer, Robertson really caught our eye at the Underclass Games in June. Robertson stands out physically for his age already and certainly has the measurables to back it up. Ran a laser-timed 60 YD at 6.64 this summer with a 90 mph exit velo and an 85 mph infield velo from shortstop. It is easy to see that the athleticism is present for Robertson. Performed well at PBR tournaments as well this summer. Will be a riser in the upcoming '23 Rankings update.

Zane Stokes SS / 2B / Mobile Christian , AL / 2022

Listed at 5-foot-10, 170 pounds, Stokes was a standout at this summer's Top Prospect Games, as well as other events over the past couple years. Simple approach at the plate from the right side with some pop up the middle. Advanced with the glove up the middle. Could make the switch to 2nd base easily and will see playing time at both positions at the Future Games. 6.88 laser-timed 60 YD. Some sneaky power at the plate as well.

Outfielders

Shifting our focus to the outfielders, it is a very talented crop that will be wearing Team Alabama across their chest in about a week. All outfielders have the chance to hit for power and possess some impressive athletic ability. Look for them to standout in the workout as well as gameplay.

Owen Beaverstock OF / 2B / St Paul's Episcopal, AL / 2022

Beaverstock has always been on our radar for the past year in terms of the outfield position for the Future Games. He has numerous tools that really have stood out at PBR events. He's an exceptional runner at 6.72 on a laser-timed 60 YD and has plenty of strength to go along with it. Posted an exit velo at 98 mph at an event this summer. Above average arm strength at 87 mph from the outfield.

Aiden Macks OF / 1B / Robertsdale , AL / 2022

Really excited to see more of Macks at the Future Games. He's a physical kid with some strength to his frame. Potential for more power and has the chance to stay at a corner spot in the outfield but could also play 1st base. Led a talented Robertsdale team to a strong start this spring before the season was shut down.

Coleman Mizell OF / LHP / Hartselle , AL / 2023

One of the more physical bats in the 2023 AL class, Mizell has really stood out each time we've seen him. Simple approach from the left side that is not afraid to shoot the ball the other way. Extra base hit machine. Good runner as well. Excited to have him on Team Alabama. Could stand out in a big way next week.

Tyler Morrison OF / RHP / Jasper , AL / 2022

Another player that really made a strong case to be on Team Alabama due to his performance at the Future Games Trials in June. Two-way guy that will see playing time in the outfield and on the mound. 6-foot-3, 170 pound frame with the possibility to fill out even more. 6.92 laser-timed 60 YD. Showcased a strong arm from the outfield (93 mph). Up to 85 mph on the mound with solid secondary stuff.

Christian Sutphin OF / RHP / Grissom, AL / 2022

Rounding the outfield position, Sutphin has enjoyed a strong summer so far and hopes to continue it throughout the Future Games. Strong showing at the Top Prospect Games that performed well during gameplay. Racks up extra base hits and just seems to make hard contact in each AB.

Pitchers

Last, but certainly not least, we move on to the arms that will be in attendance at LakePoint from August 1-3. Last year's pitcher only's was a strength of team and we expect this year to be no different. There's some high velocities on this list with some reaching 90's and 91's and others who have elite pitchability. Expect these pitchers not to stay uncommitted after their respective performances at the Future Games.

Chase Ambrose SS / RHP / Buckhorn, AL / 2023

Here's an arm that has really popped this summer for the Excel Blue Wave. 5-foot-11, 180 pound frame that allows room for projection. Fastball consistently sits in the mid-80's and can even run it up to the upper-80's on some occasions. Secondary stuff is solid. Pitches with confidence. Clean delivery with a quick arm.

Josh Bowerman RHP / 3B / Mars Hill Bible , AL / 2022

One of the many players from this summer's Top Prospect Games that really stood out. On the mound, the arm is very intriguing. Fastball played 85-87, 88 mph with exceptional command. Paired that with a sharp breaking ball that lived at the bottom of the zone. Did a great job of mixing up & down with that combo. Pitches with a plan and got some punch outs in his stint on the mound.

Steven Cash LHP / OF / Bibb County, AL / 2022

The only returning PO from last year's team, Cash returns in 2020 looking for more after a great experience last year. From the left side, the southpaw shows some impressive pitchability with a true 3-pitch mix. Yet another player that got his invite after the Top Prospect Games. Fastball worked 81-82 mph with some sink away from RHH's. Able to command the pitch to both sides of the plate. Breaking ball shows late break to it at 65-69 mph and flashed some changeups with fade at 70-71 mph. Still some room for more projection and velo.

Alton Davis II LHP / OF / Bessemer Academy , AL / 2022

Davis II will be an arm that college coaches will want to lock in on when he takes the mound for his start in Game 2 vs. Mississippi at 1:15 PM on August 2nd. Attended an event in June of 2019 and was up to 77 mph. Fast-forward to June of 2020 and Davis II was ultra impressive at the Top Prospect Games. Ran the fastball up to 91 mph, while sitting primarily sitting 88-89 mph. Command was there, especially to this glove side. Secondary offerings were enough to get hitters of the fastball (CB & CH). Still room for more velo.

Thrasher Steed RHP / 1B / Gulf Shores, AL / 2022

Another arm that we are excited to see on the bump for Team Alabama is Steed. This right-handed arm just continues to show up at PBR events and impress. 6-foot-4, 200 pound frame that has been up to 87 mph this summer at the Top Prospect Games. Flashed a breaking ball that had 11/5 action and a changeup at 79-80 mph that played well of the fastball. Also featured a firm slider at 79-80 mph. Starter profile that will continue to add velo with that frame.
