PBR Future Games: Day 4 Recap

The 2021 PBR Future Games concluded on Saturday, July 31st with teams playing their final games of the event. Carrying in a 2-0 record and looking for more, Team Alabama took care of Team Mississippi winning 6-2 to cap off a fantastic showing for the "Bama Boys". Over the three games, the offense from Team Alabama put up 23 runs in a strong offensive showing while the pitchers pounded the zone and did their part. Many of these players had breakout performances in front of the 300+ college coaches in attendance, resulting in acquired interest and in some cases, scholarship offers.

Let's take a look back at some of the standouts from Days 2 and 3 at the PBR Future Games..

 

Day 4 Standouts

+ RHP Josh Gunther (Bayside Academy, 2023) had one of the better pitching performances of the week for Team Alabama by throwing two shutout innings in the 3rd & 4th against Team Mississippi. Compact strength built into a 6-0, 190-pound frame & incorporates that weight well using a high leg kick before driving down the mound. Posted a flawless first inning of work, where he dotted up an 89-90 mph fastball to all quadrants of the zone with a quick & efficient pace. Second inning for Gunther was clean excluding a two-out walk, and showed the same velocity at more 87-90 mph. Featured two breaking balls, one being a firmer slider at 75 mph with more horizontal break & bite, and the other being a more top-to-bottom breaking ball at 70-71 mph. Sequences well, serious whip to arm action with more velocity in the tank.

 

+ 3B/C Cade Carr (Hoover, 2023) showed up at the PBR Future Games and elevated his status as a prospect even more with the performance he turned in. Medium 5-11, 165-pound frame with good athletic ability, ran a 6.90 60 YD at the workout and hit well against all arms during gameplay. Capped off an excellent event going 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and an RBI in a Game 3 win over Mississippi where he was named the MVP. Can play numerous positions on the infield and impressed behind the plate, as well. May not have the biggest stature out of some, but Cade Carr gets it done time-after-time again will help a college program win a lot of games at the next level. Winner mentality.

 

+ RHP Jake DeValk (Bayside Academy, 2023) was the second Bayside Academy Admiral of the day to throw for Team Alabama and the physical 6-3, 195-pounder did not disappoint in front of a bevy of college recruiters. Opened up with a strong first inning of work, pairing his fastball 85-89 mph fastball & 74-75 mph breaking ball effectively off each other. Fastball featured some occasional cut at times, while showing no issue landing the breaking ball for strikes with 11-5 shape to it. Lost some of the feel for the breaking ball in his scoreless second inning of work in the outing, but the fastball was good enough the get him out of the inning. Should definitely continue to see his stock rise with this strong showing on the mound.

 

+ SS Peyton Watts (Oxford, 2023) really found his groove at the plate midway through this event, and picked up a big hit in each of the final two games. Still a fairly slender 6-0, 160-pounds with plenty of room for strength to be added to the frame. Wiry athleticism with a smooth stroke from the left side showing the ability to spray to all fields during BP & in gameplay. Smoked a double down the LF line in his first at-bat of the game to score a run, and used 7.07-speed to make it to 2nd with relative ease. Fairly sizable upside for Watts, but still getting it done in the "now".

 

+ 3B/RHP Ryan Strachan (Sparkman, 2023) may not have had much to show for in the stats over the week, but the strong 6-3, 205-pound corner infielder got off some good swings against some quality arms. Recorded an inside-the-park home run in Friday's contest, and followed up with two loud outs in Game 3 on Saturday. Really uses his strength & frame well throughout the swing, posting two 95 mph+ EV's in those two aforementioned at-bats. Has shown glimpses of power in the past, but hits for average well and was a leading hitter for the 7A Senators this past spring. Also closed out Game 1 on Thursday and ran the fastball up to 90 mph in his lone inning of work.
