Alabama Preseason All State Scout Blog: An athletic group of infielders showcased their skills with the glove and the bat. A nice mix of older players and young ones performed well. Here are their individual writeups. Players that registered and went through the workout in multiple positions will have all of their positions included in one writeup
Matthew Omohundro (2021, 3B/RHP, Northview) 6’0 180 lbs- 1.20.19- Athletic infielder with fluid feet and nice glove work. Flexibility in the hips and plenty of arm strength across the diamond. On the mound his fastball was up to 83 with some cut to it. Athletic, strong lower half. Offensively he was 92 exit velocity off of a tee from a slightly open stance. Has some tilt in the bat path and does a nice job of getting his backside into his approach. Big-time juice at the plate. An impressive looking 2021 prospect.
Austin Nix (2020, SS/RHP, Oneonta) 5’11 165 lbs- 1.20.19- A very solid looking 2020 prospect that is a hard nosed player. Offensively he starts with a slightly open stance and uses a toe tap approach to create good rhythm and timing. Above average pop with a middle of the field approach, 90 exit velocity off of a tee. Smooth actions on the infield with plus arm strength to make every throw at SS. A solid player all the way around.
Drew Nix (2019, 3B/RHP, Hartselle) 6’1 234 lbs- 1.20.19- had a very productive day at the event. On the mound his fastball was up to 86 and he attacked the zone. Solidly built ball player that uses his core strength well. The breaking ball head late sharp bite and nice shape. Big time upside on the mound. Plenty of arm strength during IF drills and was plenty good with the glove to play either corner infield position. Did a nice job of keeping his barrel in the zone during his swing and showed some nice pullside pop. 91 exit velo off of a tee.
Bryant Andrews (2020, 3B/OF, Faith Academy) 6’0 200 lbs- 1.20.19- A very strong player with nice core strength. Solid 3-D prospect with nice lateral movement and range. Big time glove with nice presentation. Continues to impress at the plate with a very good tempo and rhythm in his set up. Really controls the barrel with some launch in his bat angle which creates plus pop in his swing. Very impressive on the day.
Graham Blankenship (2020, 3B/SS, Calera) 6’0 195 lbs- 1.20.19- A guy that can really play anywhere on the infield due to nice athleticism and feel with the glove. Showed nice lateral range and advanced footwork. Was very impressive at the event. Showed good rhythm at the plate with plus barrel control through the zone. Had a middle of the field approach with a smooth well synced swing. A definite 2020 to keep an eye on.
Tucker Musgrove (2020, SS/RHP, Mary G. Montgomery) 6’0 150 lbs- 1.20.19- Athletic middle infielder with some savvy to his game. Quick twitch actions in the infield with the glove with nice lateral movement. Solid glove presentation, seemed to get all big hops to field. At the plate he started with a square your stance with nice bat speed and a “ whippy” bat. Well synced swing with nice pull side juice. Did a nice job of barreling balls up during BP
Robbie Albright (2019, C/1B, Vincent) 6’2 205 lbs- 1.20.19- Big, strong athlete that does a lot of things very well. Has good speed (4.05 H-1B) to go along with plus strength (92 exit velo). Solid actions around the bag at 1B with nice foot work. Starts from a slightly open stance at the plate and has plus bat speed with a quick barrel. Showed a strong pull side approach during BP. An interesting 2019.
Carson Byrd (2019, 2B/SS, Spanish Fort) 5’10 188 lbs- 1.20.19- Low to the ground player on the infield with nice actions and solid footwork. Does a very good job with the transfer of the ball. Looks to be more of a 2B. Solid approach at the plate starting with a narrow square stance. Short, simple swing with nice bat speed and the ability to use the entire field. Just a solid approach at the plate that made it look easy with his approach.
Frederick Wessel (2022, SS/RHP, Randolph) 5’11 160 lbs- 1.20.19- A young, but very impressive 2022 at the event. Another low to the ground player on the infield with nice club presentation and plenty of arm strength across the diamond. A very solid defender. A young, but very impressive 2022 at the event. On the mound he showed a very loose arm action with ASR on his FB that was up to 80 mph with a tight spin on his breaking ball. At the plate he starts with a narrow square stance and creates some launch in the swing but was predominantly a line drive guy during BP. He did use all fields during his round. A very interesting 2022 to keep an eye on.
Trey Mooney (2021, RHP/3B, Oxford) 6’2 198 lbs- 1.20.19- solid fundamentals on the infield and really played low to the ground. Glove is in nice position to field and he has plenty of arm strength to make the throw from 3B. At the plate he starts from a slightly open stance with above average pop. Has nice tempo in the swing and set up. Hit all zones while during BP. Is really a big time 2021 RHP to keep an eye on. No doubt this is where his future is. Very solid mechanics on the mound and didn’t throw a FB under 84 mph and topped at 86 mph. The slider has very tight spin and is a true out pitch with big time bite. Uses his lower half very well and should continue to progress into a big time arm in the 2021 class.
Carter Clark (2021, 2B/SS, Trinity Presbyterian) 5’9 135 lbs- 1.20.19- Young, switch hitting MIF prospect with solid actions in the field. Has some quick twitch actions and has a sound fundamental base to his defensive game. He will continue to get stronger over the years but the fundamentals are definitely there. Showed a quiet load from both sides of the plate and a middle of the field approach. Starts very slightly open with nice rhythm of the hands. Appeared to be more of a natural right handed hitter.
Taylor Patterson (2022, SS/2B, Homewood) 5’9 140 lbs- 1.20.19- Athletic actions on the infield for this young prospect. Quick transfer and a nice job of gaining ground on his throw. Solid glove actions that really seemed to pick it well. Starts from a slightly open stance at the plate and does a nice job keeping his barrel through the zone with some tilt in the swing plane. Creates some juice with the hands and showed the ability to spray the ball around.
John Rice (2020, 3B/RHP, UMS-Wright) 5’11 180 lbs- 1.20.19- Solid defender on the infield with plus feet. Low to the ground offender with a quick transfer. Nice defensive actions. Has a nice balanced swing from a narrow stance and a solid set up. Showed a flat barrel path with some pop in the swing. Does a nice job with the hands in getting to the launch position before the swing.
Connor Edwards (2021, LHP/1B, Madison County) 5’9 155 lbs- 1.20.19- A 2021 that showed good footwork on the infield at 1B. Has nice feel with the glove and the feet. Shoes athleticism coming off of the bag. Showed a short, compact swing and the ability to use all fields. Has nice bat speed and keeps the barrel in the zone for a long time with a middle of the field approach. Very clean mechanics on the mound with big time ASR on his FB which was up to 76 mph. Well shaped breaking ball with true light depth and bite. Was able to command all pitches.
Matt Manley (2023, RHP/SS, Madison Academy) 5’10 135 lbs- 1.20.19- A very nice 2023 prospect that should continue to progress as strength and physicality continues. Already had solid fundamentals and skills. Low to the ground player on the infield with nice body control and glove presentation. Very slight open stance with a toe tap approach at the plate. Does a nice job loading the hands and keeping them inside the ball on the swing. This makes for a short compact approach resulting in a middle of the field offensive game. Has some tilt in the swing. On the mound, he pounded the zone with all of his pitches and showed a plus change up with some tumble. The FB had nice down action and he located very well.
Chris Lynam (2023, 3B/RHP, Grissom) 5’11 185 lbs- 1.20.19- another young prospect that held his own at the event. A physical 2023 grad that showed nice actions with the glove and solid feet after the catch. Moved laterally very well and showed nice arm strength across the diamond. At the plate he started from an open, wide stance and showed good pop to all fields. Has some tilt in the swing with a nice barrel control and a very smooth swing. Did a nice job of locating down in the zone on the mound, using his lower half very well. The FB has some very nice ASR And he showed nice control of a well shaped breaking ball.
