7A No. 9 Oak Mountain (6) vs. 7A Thompson (3)

ALABASTER, AL - Thompson took Game 1 of their first 7A Area 5 series against No. 9 Oak Mountain on Tuesday night at Oak Mountain in a 8-2 game. Both teams met again to play a doubleheader on Thursday to wrap up the series. In Game 1, a pair of southpaws tossed against each other with LHP Gavin Chandler (2022) going for the Warriors and LHP Matthew Heiberger (2023) going for the Eagles.

This game had the looks of it being a high-scoring affair with both teams hanging a crooked number on the scoreboard in their respective frames. For the Eagles, the bats came out to play early on. 1B Maddox Macrory (2022) and C Carter Kimbrell (2023) each recorded a RBI double to their name, and LHP Matthew Heiberger helped out his own cause at the plate by adding two more runs on a two RBI single to right field. Heading to the bottom of the 1st trailing 4-0, the Warriors answered back and cut the deficit in half. After a leadoff single and a walk, 1B Ben Pearman (2022) stepped up in a big spot at the plate. Pearman drove a fastball over the plate and hit it to deep right center field for a two RBI double, cutting the score to 4-2 heading to the 2nd.

Both teams traded zero’s over the next two innings before anyone could push across another run. After Heiberger tossed a scoreless bottom of the 3rd, the Eagles came to the plate in the 4th with the heart of the order due up and ready to do damage. After two quick outs, a pair of Eagles were able to reach on a walk and an error. 1B Maddox Macrory (2022) continued to come through in the clutch, as he brought home a run on a RBI single into right center field. Another run came home to score on a passed ball in the inning, and the Eagles extended their lead to 6-2.

After allowing two runs in the 1st on a Pearman double, LHP Matthew Heiberger (2023) settled into a groove for the duration of his outing. He was pulled in the 5th inning after giving the Eagles a stellar outing when they needed it most with their backs against the wall. The talented lefty finished tossing 4.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 BB and 10 K’s while earning the win. 3B/RHP Davis Gillespie (2022, Southern Miss) relieved Heiberger to finish the game on the mound. The Warriors were able to push across a run in the bottom of the 6th to make it 6-3, but that score would hold until the end, giving the Eagles a huge win to even the series back up.

*Oak Mountain won Game 3 of the series 6-1.

6A Chelsea (6) vs. 6A No. 10 Homewood (1)

CHELSEA, AL - Chelsea and No. 9 Homewood headed into this week a perfect 2-0 in 6A Area 9 after sweeps of their previous opponents last week. Chelsea took the first game of the series on Tuesday 3-0 behind a no-hitter from LHP Connor Ball and timely hitting offensively. The Hornets trotted out another high level arm in RHP Brock Hill (2021, South Alabama) who had been pitching exceptionally well in his last few outings. LHP Will Heisler (2021) took the ball for the Patriots in Game 2 on Thursday night.

It was an impressive showing on timely hitting and excellent execution in the 1st for the Hornets. 3B Jackson Webster (2021, Birmingham Southern) and DH Kaleb Hester (2024) had the big swings of the inning, with each hitting a two RBI double of their own. OF Connor Ball (2021, Alabama), who tossed the complete game no-hitter on Tuesday, drove in a run in the 1st on a RBI single and also brought home another in the 2nd on a RBI fielder’s choice groundout to shortstop. The Hornets took a commanding 6-0 lead to the 3rd inning and never looked back from there. 

RHP Brock Hill (2021, South Alabama) was easily the star of the show with his performance on the mound. The senior righty was dominant throwing four pitches for strikes and a fastball that got up to 89 mph in the 3rd inning. He shutdown the Patriot’s lineup for six innings, while only allowing an unearned run in the 5th on an error. He finished throwing 6 IP, H, R (0 ER), BB & 12 K’s while earning the win.

Homewood was forced to go to the bullpen early on in the game, but they received two excellent outings from a pair upperclassmen. RHP Josh Beasley (2022) and RHP Austin Whitley (2021) combined to throw five scoreless innings in relief to keep the Patriots in the game. However, the six runs posted in the first two innings of the game by the Chelsea proved to be enough at the end. It was a team effort offensively for the Hornets, as five hitters each recorded a hit in the contest. Timely hitting and Hill’s performance on the mound was enough for Chelsea to win Game 2 and the series by a score of 6-1.

7A Prattville (7) vs. 7A Dothan (6)

PRATTVILLE AL - A premier matchup took place as the Prattville Lions hosted Dothan Wolves in a clash of 7A Area 3 opponents. Dothan took Game 1 on Tuesday by a score of 3-0 and the Wolves handed the ball to RHP/SS Te’Relle George Mills (2021, Lawson State CC) for Game 2. Prattville countered with LHP Jacob Floyd (2021). 

Things got started early as the Wolves took an early 2-0 lead with help from switch hitting RHP/OF Chase Allsup (2021, Auburn) as he hammered a 2 RBI double to CF. Lions defense was able to get out of the jam after a few walks and HBP to leave runners stranded in the first inning. Prattville was able to get things going in the third with a double off of the left center wall from SS Sam Baker (2021, Parkland College) who just missed a HR. The Lions had several runners reach base and shortly after, MIF Mason Dubose (2021, Gulf Coast State) came through with an RBI double, giving the Lions a 4-2 lead going into the fourth. 

Trailing 4-2 in the fourth, Dothan quickly tied things up in the 4th inning as Matthew Omohundro (2021, Central Alabama CC) lined a shot to right field for a sacrifice fly and 1B Jace Dyer (2021, Southern Union CC) pulled the Wolves back even with an RBI single. Mills began to settle in the fifth and sixth inning on the mound with as he continued to get ahead of hitters early in the count. His mix of the fastball and breaking ball was very effective as he had 9 K through six innings.

The game headed to extra innings all tied up at 4-4 as the Wolves scored 2 runs in the top of the 8th inning as Omohundro drew a bases loaded walk and Dyer delivered a sacrifice fly to put the Wolves up 6-4. Prattville would not go away. With the bases loaded and 2 outs, Baker again came through for the Lions as he provided a 2 RBI single to tie things and the 7th run would come around to score on an error on the same play. The Lions improved to 19-11 (1-1 in area play).

7A No. 8 Florence (11) vs. 7A James Clemens (5)

MADISON AL - 7A Area 8 play continued on Thursday night in Madison as the James Clemens Jets hosted the No. 8 Florence Falcons in a doubleheader after the Falcons won Game 1 of the series on Tuesday in Florence by a score of 13-7. On Thursday, the Falcons were able to sweep the first two games as they won Game 2 by a score of 11-5. The Falcons sent RHP Samuel Sneed (2021) to the mound and the senior turned in another quality outing as he went 5 strong innings on the bump. Sneed scattered 5 hits over those 5 innings and gave up 2 runs (1 ER) and struck out 5 while only allowing 1 base on balls. Senior RHP Connor Legere (2021, Cedarville University) got the starting nod for the Jets and he did a nice job against the powerful Falcon lineup. Legere worked 3 2/3 innings on the mound and scattered 4 and gave up 2 runs (both earned). He struck out 3 hitters and walked 2.

 Florence jumped on the board first by scoring 2 runs in the home half of the 1st inning as Parker White (2021, Wallace- Hanceville) got things going with a double to start the game and eventually scored on a fielder’s choice groundout by Zeke Bishop (2021, University of South Alabama) . Grant Taylor (2021, LSU) followed with an RBI triple to rightfield that scored Caleb Mahan (2022), who earlier walked. James Clemens would score 1 run in the bottom of the 1^st as John Mark Ingalls (2021) led things off with a triple to left field and scored one batter later as Gio Lopez (2023) scored Ingalls on a groundout to second base. James Clemens tied things up in the bottom of the 3^rd as once again, Ingalls was right in the middle of the action. With 2 outs, he singled and later took second base and scored one batter later as Lopez scored him on a hard hit ball to 2B that was ruled an error. Things stayed tied up until the 5^th as Florence scored 3 runs in their half of the inning. Mahan led off the inning with a bunt single, Bishop was walked with 1 out and Taylor drove in another run to make it 3-2 Falcons. Preston McAlexander (2021) then laid down a perfect squeeze bunt that scored Bishop to make it 4-2. JT Russell (2021) singled to score Taylor and give the Falcons a 5-2. The Falcons would add 2 more runs in the 6^th inning as Jackson McCreless (2021, Calhoun) drew a 1 out walk and Bishop followed that up with a double, putting runners on 2^nd and 3^rd with 2 outs. Taylor drove home another run, this time on a sacrifice fly to deep centerfield and McAlexander singled to score Bishop from second base to make it 7-2. The Jets would not go away as they scored 3 runs of their own in the 6^th to make it 7-5. Walker Hoskins (2021) led the inning off with a double and Legere drew a 1 out walk. Connor Cantrell (2021) then doubled to centerfield to score Hoskins and his double was followed by another double off the bat of Eli Bolden (2021) that scored two more to leave the game in doubt headed to the 7^th inning. In the top of the 7^th, Florence put the game out of reach by scoring 4 runs. The big blow was a bases clearing double from McCreless that made the score 10-5 as McCreless score the next batter as Bishop drove him in on yet another hit to give us the final 11-5 final score.
