OUTLOOK:
The Hornets advanced all the way to Montgomery only to lose to Cullman in the 6A state championship series. Coach Michael Stallings returns 5 positional players and 6 pitchers that saw significant time on the mound from 2019 as the team’s expectations haven’t changed since last season. One thing the Hornets will be looking for are a few infielders to provide some depth on the dirt. One mainstay that returns is senior OF/RHP Carter Frederick. The Auburn University signee was the Shelby County Hitter of the Year in 2019 while hitting .387 with 15 2B’s, 4 HR’s and 38 RBI’s. Although he will be counted on heavily as a two way guy he is far from the only key player back from the state runner up team. OF/LHP Connor Ball was a 1st team All State selection last year as a sophomore while winning 9 games with 113 strikeouts and a very impressive 1.96 ERA. Another 2021 pitcher, RHP Brock Hill also returns after winning 10 games a year ago. Hill is an Ole Miss commit. C Jacob Boyle also returns behind the plate after posting a .317 batting average and .471 on base percentage while throwing out 15 “would be” base stealers a year ago. The “Frye twins” also return to the lineup as both Austin Frye and Garrett Frye (2020 grads) return to the infield and will also see time on the mound. Both brothers have some pop at the plate as well. OF Brady Morgan does a lot of things well on the field and is a solid, steady player. He is a Loyola New Orleans commit. JT McGregor returns for his senior year and looks to contribute in the OF and on the mound. The senior RHP has nice size (6’3 185 lbs) and “stuff” on the mound. Another talented junior (joining Ball and Hill) for the Hornets is INF Adam Reaves. A year ago he hit .380 with an on base percentage of .437 with 9 stolen bases as a sophomore. A young arm to keep an eye on this season is LHP Reid Gongwer as he will be battling for some innings this spring. The Hornets seem poised to be a major player in the 6A championship race once again this year.
