A Look Back at the '19 Class: C/UTL Peyton Wilson
May 16, 2020
The 2019 season was a good one for the state of Alabama, as it produced some impressive talent from top to bottom. This class featured some MLB Draft selections and players that opted to go to school and had productive freshman seasons before they were cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, we want to go back and take a look at C/UTL Peyton Wilson (Hoover HS).
2019 (Senior at Hoover HS):
A key piece to the Buccaneers, Wilson enjoyed an impressive senior season at Hoover. In 2019, Wilson and the Buccaneers won a very tough 7A Area 5 that was composed of numerous talented Birmingham teams before being eliminated in the state playoffs. On a loaded roster that featured numerous players that had gone on to sign Division 1 scholarships, Wilson was the catalyst. His versatility proved to be paramount, both at Hoover and the University of Alabama. Wilson mainly played catcher and 2nd base, but could play anywhere on the diamond. In 2019, Wilson hit .369 (52-141) with 7 2B’s, 6 3B’s and 6 HR’s versus Hoover’s loaded schedule.

Wilson vs. Spain Park
The University of Alabama signee also stole 22 bases and was solid defensively all year long. This performance was good enough for him to earn a spot as an infielder on the All PBR Alabama Team.

2020 (Freshman at Alabama):
Wilson had no trouble transferring his play from 7A Alabama High School Baseball to SEC Baseball. As a freshman, Wilson kept finding his way into the lineup as the season progressed. In only his second start in a Crimson Tide uniform, the switch hitting utility guy posted an absurd stat line vs. Middle Tennessee State. He finished 4-4 on the day with four runs scored, two doubles, one RBI, and a stolen base. In his next start only two days later, Wilson went 3-6 with three runs scored and two RBI’s vs. Harvard. He went on to become the SEC Freshman of the Week. He and the Crimson Tide (16-1) were both of to a scorching hot start before the season was cut short. His final stats for the 2020 campaign are as follows:
.333 BA (10-30), 12 R’s, 3 2B’s, 8 RBI’s, and 4 BB’s
Like all of us, Wilson would love to still be playing right now, but his role should expand for the Crimson Tide in 2021. His versatility that he brings to the baseball field is very valuable to a program. To check out his college profile put together by our good friends over at D1Baseball, click HERE.
