2020 Whalley Upperclass Open ID - Quick Hits
ON THE HILL
Nate Rosser RHP / South Delta Secondary, BC / 2021Rankings StateRank: 21 / POS: 8
Long and lanky 6-foot-4 right-hander out of Delta impressed on the day, working with a loose arm swing and fastball that sat 87-88 and touched 89 mph. Room to grow and add strength, uncommitted 21’ you need to be on.

Chase Marshall 1B / RHP / Earl Marriott, BC / 2022One of the top arms in the 2022 class, this University of Washington commit was electric on the mound at the Whalley Open, sitting 87-89 mph, touching 90. Big body at 6-foot-3 and 190 lbs, definitely has room to fill out. Good sink on the heater thanks to his downward plane. Curveball is a work in progress. Can also swing it well at the dish, posted a 93 mph exit velocity on the day. A very intriguing two-way prospect to keep an eye on.
|
Reece Usselman LHP / Langley Secondary, BC / 2022Usselmann was very impressive on the day. He pounds the strike zone from the left side, possessing a solid three-pitch mix. The heater sits comfortably at 83-84 mph with arm-side tail, while the curveball is more of a slurve thanks to his arm slot. At 6-foot-2 and 150 lbs, Usselmann still has a ton of room to fill out. One of the top 2022 arms to keep a close eye on as he matures over the next couple years here. |
DEFENSIVE GEMS
Ryan McCarthy OF / RHP / Delta Secondary, BC / 2021Rankings StateRank: 29 / POS: 3
McCarthy showed off the best positional arm on the day, hitting 84mph from the OF. More than that, he hit 84 without trying to hit 84. His movements and routes to the ball were efficient, and experienced. All of his throws had good ride and backspin, and you can tell he enjoys racking up the Outfield Assists.
|
Kai Okuyama SS / 2B / McMath Secondary, BC / 2022Okuyama impressed right away in the 60s, running back to back 6.7s first thing in the morning. His speed and athleticism transferred well to his infield footwork, keeping momentum well through ground balls with the right timing, lending to a smooth and fair 74 mph arm across the diamond. Good glove actions; looked smooth.
|
William Wilson SS / 2B / Sands secondary, BC / 2022Wilson looks the part of a middle infielder, currently plays shortstop, and it isn’t out of reach for him to stay there in the future. He has decent timing and footwork, and an accurate arm across the diamond. He has good instincts in his approach to the ball, and with age, maturity and strength, he should continue to establish himself as a good gloveman. |
AT THE PLATE
Bennett Freiter C / 1B / Foothills Composite, AB / 2021Rankings StateRank: 4 / POS: 1
An Okotoks product, and NDSU commit, Freiter is an imposing figure in the box at 6’3” 205lbs. His sound turned heads right away. Freiter has a simple compact and low effort swing, very repeatable. Freiter showed a good inside the ball approach, helping him spray the middle of the field easily, including a couple shots over the wall. Freiter led the showcase in Exit Velocity, at 94mph off a tee.

Ryan McCarthy OF / RHP / Delta Secondary, BC / 2021Rankings StateRank: 29 / POS: 3
It is a shame we won’t get to see what McCarthy would’ve done in his first full season in the PBL. His swing has a natural loft, good bat speed, and plays well going forward. He has committed to his body through the offseason and has returned at 6’0” 190lbs. An excellent powerful stroke, had a max Exit Velocity of 91mph off the tee. |
Wylie Waters SS / 3B / Sentinel Secondary, BC / 2022Waters is a projectable bat, at 6’1”, 160lbs he still has plenty of room to grow and put on strength to compliment his 91mph max Exit Velocity off a tee on the day. He has a repeatable swing, being kicked off by a smooth and straightforward load. Waters is smooth and balanced through footstrike, leading to an aggressive and compact swing. He sprayed line drives well on the day. An exciting individual once he fills out and puts on weight. Swing projects well. |
Brayden Mayencourt 2B / C / Fleetwood Park, BC / 2021Rankings StateRank: 20 / POS: 1
One of two participants to leave the notoriously pitcher-friendly Whalley Stadium on the day. Mayencourt has a quick and compact swing from the left side, and has all the signs of a gamer. He has great rhythm and was able to spray backspin line drives to all fields, very repeatable motion. He had a max Exit Velocity of 88mph on the day off a tee.
