2020 New Year Open - Quick Hits
February 24, 2020
We would like to thank all who participated in PBR Ontario's 2020 New Year Open. This was a great opportunity for 2020-2023 prospects to be identified before season, create and update their profiles, as well see where they stack up with their peers. Many players impressed during their individual workouts at the showcase.
In the coming weeks, we will be adding and updating profiles for each of the players in attendance, including complete analysis and video.

2020 New Year Open - Quick Hits
Cameron Lugtenburg OF / RHP / St. Stephens Catholic School, ON / 2020Rankings StateRank: 60 / POS: 14
Report: The left-handed hitting, uncommitted senior was arguably the best player in attendance with numbers being put up in every category. There was a silence from everyone as he flashed 93s and 91s from the outfield and offensively in the cage he found barrels with bat speed and big finish, to go along with a 7.25 sixty and a 92 mph exit velocity.
|
Manny Alberto / NA, AB / 2022Report: 5-foot-8, 155-pounds, opened some eyes of some at the New Year Open. At the plate started showing off his quick fluid hands that made solid contact with the ball popping off the bat to all fields. Showing full arm extension and follow-through after making contact, his exit velos from his natural right side topped out at 85 mph as well from the left side where he has room to grow as he gets more comfortable with it. The slick infielder showed some smooth arm action and had a defensive range that took good routes to the ball. He was displaying a 76 mph fielding Velo and 7.84 60 yard time, with some time and growth, Alberto can build around his solid bat and someone to watch moving forward.
|
Josh Matteson RHP / OF / Aldershot, ON / 2020Rankings StateRank: 151 / POS: 46
Report: The right-hander out of Burlington has made big strides over the year and is someone schools need to be on as the look to round out their 20’ class. Matteson has jumped 6-8 mph over the year with his fastball which was 86-88 mph, the slider showed some tilt and mixed in a splitter as well. There is some effort, but it’s good effort and only upside with Matteson moving forward.
|
Quinn Tavares RHP / St Martins, ON / 2022Rankings StateRank: 29 / POS: 12
Report: One of the top pens of the day, the velocity has ticked up for Tavares with the fastball being 84-86 mph, but it did not affect his command and ability to pound the zone. The actions were clean, he’s put on strength and mass, and the off-speed feel for his curveball did not go away. Exciting to see Tavares have these gains, and being a 2022, someone to make a must follow.

Jonathan Stables 1B / OF / Christ The King, ON / 2021Report: 99 mph. That was the exit velocity for Stables and one look at him you agree. It’s a muscular6-foot-2, 180-pounds with room to add more size and strength. The bat was loose and there is rhythm to his load with quick and strong hands to contact. Natural loft and some lift to swing and looks to do damage with loud contact to the pull side. A 2021 middle of the order bat, definite guy to add on follow lists as I know will be watching Stables once we get outside. |
Kyle Magdic 1B / 3B / Blessed Trinity, ON / 2021Report: A physical and muscular 6-foot-2, 215-pound right-handed hitting corner infielder who profiles as a first-baseman, Magdic put together an impressive round in BP, displaying a balanced and strong swing, generates well from the lower half and was able to launch balls in the cage. He did show feel for the hit tool as well, and was able to stay up the middle at times while most everything was loud. Great first look and looks to be a force in the 21’ class with power potential. |
Julian Russell 3B / RHP / Jean Vanier Catholic, ON / 2021Report: Russell threw one of the most impressive bullpens on the day from a short action in the back and out a ¾ slot. He moved the fastball around to both sides of the plater with some arm-side run, working down in the zone and a repeatable delivery with regular effort. The breaking ball worked in the 72-73 range and filled the zone, working again down and too his glove side with 11/5 shape. A nice 2021 who continues to trend upwards with feel and ability to pitch. |
