3/28/18 - 6’4/205, S/R, Junior- Athletic, long bodied outfielder with plus speed and power potential. After a poor showing during my looks at him in the Cape Cod League last summer and the first two games of the series this weekend, he broke out in a big way against the Sunday pitching of Auburn with a 4-for-5, five RBI day. Previous to Sunday, Auburn exploited a large hole in Pompey’s left-handed swing as he repeatedly swung over the top of anything moving down or away on the outer third of the plate. In the third game of the series when facing lesser pitchers who could not throw to this location with movement, Pompey showed the easy, plus bat speed and the jump of the ball off his bat that he is known for. His line drive home run to right field to leadoff the game left the bat at an exit velocity of 105 mph. His season high is 114 mph on a home run earlier this season against Northern Kentucky. Pompey is also a plus runner with an athletic stride, running 4.09 on a groundout to second base. He showed a well below average arm in pre-game (and the Cape), but a slightly better arm while hitting the cutoff throwing home to stop a runner at third. His outfield defense is below average with limited range and will require many repetitions to become adequate at the major league level. An old scouting adage describes him best; “the more he hits, the better his defense.” Pompey is also known to have a deep understanding of his swing and intelligence for the game. For me, he is a high risk prospect with a history of swing/miss. In all likelihood, he will be selected in the first round. I’m personally more bearish since I haven’t seen the consistency or the ability to produce hard contact against good pitching. His plus run tool is great, but it doesn’t impact the game on the bases or in the outfield. Regardless of my evaluations, his athleticism, bat speed, bloodlines and extraordinary spring statistics from both this year (.387/.479/.677) and last (.361/.464/.541) keep him as a potential first round draft prospect. Pompey reminds me, both physically and skill/tool-wise, of one-time Phillies super prospect Dominic Brown.
