Inside the Recruitment: 2018 SS Craig Yoho Commits to Houston

2018 SS Craig Yoho (Fishers HS) recently committed to Houston.  The 6-foot-2, 185 pounder was a participant at the 2016 PBR Future Games.

PBR: Ultimately, why did you choose to commit to Houston?

Yoho: I chose Houston because they are a successful program that has veteran coaches and top notch facilities. 

PBR: Where did they first see you compete?

Yoho: Houston first saw me play at a tournament in Nashville during the middle of the summer. 

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

Yoho: I had narrowed my schools down to three; Houston, Virginia Tech, and Indiana 

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? Was it as expected? Easy/Difficult?

Yoho: I expected a long process with the excitement of getting the opportunity to visit schools and ultimately continue my baseball career. I believe I under anticipated how much thought really goes into making this huge decision. Overall the decision was very hard, all three of the schools were very appealing and had a lot to offer.  

PBR: What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career after HS?

Yoho: I really wanted a Program that gave me the best opportunity to compete for Championships. Another big factor was Veteran coaches that would help develop my game. 

PBR: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you?  Was there a particular game or event you feel turned the corner for you?

Yoho:  My recruiting process came in waves, the first one being at the beginning of the summer, the second after the Futures Games. The third and biggest spark in the process was on September 1 when coaches could first contact me. 

PBR: At what point did you realize you were a college caliber player and become serious about taking your game to the next level?

Yoho: Playing college baseball has been one of my biggest aspirations since I was a little kid. The summer after my Freshman year my dream of becoming a College baseball player began to have some truth behind it. The biggest thing that got me to realize it was a possibility was that I grew taller, stronger and faster, giving me the athleticism and projectability that coaches like to see.  

PBR: Who is the best player you have faced in Indiana, and why?

Yoho: The best player I have faced in Indiana is my High School teammate Luke Duermit. Duermit throws a heavy ball with lots of movement in addition to his funky wind up that has kept me off balanced throughout our inner squad scrimmages for the past three years. 

PBR: What advice would you give young baseball players striving to get where you are at?

Yoho: Don’t be obsessed with mechanics if you are an athlete first and build on mechanics as you are better off than most kids who strive for the perfect robotic swing or footwork. Also you can never know enough about the game of baseball. Having a high baseball IQ will take you far in this sport. 

PBR: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?

Yoho: Hitting a homerun in my first career varsity at bat. 

PBR: Preview your high school season for us.  How do you feel your team will be?  What are your expectations and goals?

Yoho: Our team this year will arguably be the best team to come through Fishers High School. We have a solid pitching staff to lean on and hitters that have the capability to explode this year. Our goals are set high and we expect nothing less than a sectional and won’t be happy without a State Championship. 

PBR: Who do you play for in the summer?  What has been your most memorable experience with them?

Yoho: For the past six summers I’ve played with the Lids Indiana Bulls. The most memorable experience was when we played a Canadian team this past summer and won on my walk off single.
