Shenton has a strong frame at 6 feet, 200 pounds. He has played some third base this summer, while seeing time at first and left field, but the Washington recruit’s value lies in his bat. Swinging from the left side, he takes a short, direct path to the ball with a quick, loose swing. He gets good extension and can drive the ball to all fields. In Long Beach, he smoked a triple to left-center field that had an exit velo of 98. He went 5-for-11 there with just one strikeout before going 3-for-11 with one whiff at the Met Classic.
8/8/15 - Stood out with his bat at the Tournament of Stars and he doesn’t seem to have slowed down at all this summer. He went 2-for-3 today with two RBIs and two runs scored. His single in his first at-bat came off the bat at 99.9 and he followed it up with a 98 and 99.3 exit velo. His swing is short and direct and he gets good extension. He tripled to left-center field in his second at-bat.
6/23/15 - Was short to the ball with good bat speed, which translated to some good rounds of BP. He got good extension through contact and generated some lift.
3/23/19: Coming off a strong showing in the Cape which saw him slash .349/.450/.490 with an All-Star game appearance, Shenton has struggled out of the gates this spring. So far he's batting just .230 in 100 at-bats. Standing 5-foot-11, 200 pounds, Shenton has limited physical projection. He possesses average arm strength and actions at the hot corner with below average range. On this look his body control throws were not made with the best accuracy. During batting practice, he showed good bat speed with above average raw power to his pull side. He tended to hit off his backside a little too much and worked uphill to the ball. He's normally known to stay connected well during his swing, but on this look his elbow got out in front on this pitch away for a 6-3 groundout. Despite his struggles thus far this season, Shenton has always hit. For that reason alone he is more than likely to rebound and the club who selects him will be buying a bat-first prospect. (Seifert)
3/13/19: Part of a talented crop of corner infielders in the collegiate draft class, Shenton stands out for the impact provided in his left-handed stroke, complete with plus bat speed and above average raw power. After slashing .344/.417/.524 as a sophomore, he carried that momentum into the summer where he showed an advanced approach on the Cape, hitting .349/.450/.490 with four home runs. He has struggled to get going this season, however, showing more swing-and-miss than previously displayed and he's barreling balls less frequently. The struggles were evident against Marshall over the weekend, as he went 1-for-12 with five strikeouts. His swing commences with his hands at ear level, a few inches higher than they were held over the summer. To compensate for this adjustment, the first movement within his modest load is to drop the hands, disrupting the fluidity of his natural uppercut swing. The hands remain quick enough to punish mistakes over the plate, and the successful track record with wood help to temper concerns over his recent struggles. There's not much projection left on his 6-foot, 200 pound frame, and he'll need to prioritize strength and conditioning training to realize his full potential. At the hot corner, he pairs an average glove with average arm strength, but his limited range could ultimately necessitate a move across the dirt to first base. Wherever he ends up, teams will be investing in the bat. Assuming he's able to make the requisite adjustments and right the ship down the stretch, he would slot in as a potential late Day One selection. (Granger)
8/20/18: Shenton just wrapped up an outstanding summer by being named MVP of the of the Cape Cod League championship series. In six playoff games he hit a scorching .522/.607/1.043 after slashing .349/.450/.490 across 44 regular season games. Strong bodied with a developed build at six-foot, 200 pounds. Defensively, possesses average actions and arm strength at 3B. Might be better suited for first base in the long-run. At the plate, Shenton has above average contact skills to go with an advanced hitting approach. Stays relaxed with an upright set-up before getting into a subtle, forward stride. Level barrel path through the zone that can generate hard contact to all fields. Stays connected during the swing and keeps hands inside of the ball. Rarely loses the barrel or lets hands get away from his body. Advanced college bat who could improve draft stock with more power production in 2019. (D Jurik)
