Van Alstine was pretty strong in his brief outing Saturday. The velo has ticked up just a bit, sitting 86-88 mph with the fastball. It didn't feel like one of those short appearances where he knew he was going to be done so he was just blowing it out. He was under control, had normal effort, and attacked hitters. After his first hitter he settled in well, flashing some fastball command to the glove side. The slider, which was his go to last year in tough situations, was 75-77 mph. He will present a tough challenge for opposing lineups, if he assumes a similar closer roll like he did last year. He pitches with a lot of energy and is not afraid of anyone he faces. The VMI commit brings a little Papelbon swagger and focus to the mound with him, which makes him exciting to watch.

Van Alstine came in for a very short relief appearance on Tuesday night. 6-foot, 193-pound projectable frame that continues to add strength. Small glimpse of the progress the Van Alstine has made on the mound and wanted to point out a few things. Shorter arm circle and works from a varied three-quarter/low three-quarter slot. The slot drops a bit when he goes to the slider. The fastball was 83-84 and the slider, which he used most, was 72-73 mph. Came on in a 2-0 count with two outs and walked his first hitter with two fastballs. Then faced a left handed hitter, who he consistently back-doored sliders to. The slider had some 10/4 and 11/5 shape to it. It showed a little bit more 11/5 with some depth when the arm slot did not drop as much and he was able to stay behind and on top of it. Interesting follow going into the summer as we are back in the live recruiting period.
