Yates is uncommitted and is taller with an athletic frame that has strength present in the lower half. Heavy crossfire delivery, hides ball well and creates a lot of deception and tough angle for hitters with that delivery, falls off and recoils as he finishes. Very short arm action that is loose and quick, throws with some effort, throws from a higher three-quarters arm slot. Fastball was 86-88, touching 89 early, settled into 84-87 in the third inning and held that for the rest of his outing. Pitch has angle and a bit of late life to it. Showed ability to attack both sides of the plate and was not afraid to go in on righthanders. Threw two distinct breaking balls, a slider with later tight 1/7 break in the 73-75 range and a curveball that was a bit slower with bigger sharp 1/7 break to it in the 69-72 range. Also threw a couple change-ups that had good armspeed and were mostly straight at 80-82. Battled through a tough first inning and then settled in showing control, only walking one hitter and hitting one. Threw 49 strikes in 75 pitches. Frame suggests he can hold up to a starter's workload and the pitch mix is there as well. Yates has made a big jump since we saw him last May and still has some more in the tank

Yates is 6-1 with an athletic frame that has some lower half strength and plenty of projection left to it. Throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, very short loose arm action with some late effort to his delivery. Stays tall, strides slightly closed with an athletic finish. Fastball was 79-82 with some downward angle and a bit of late armside run that plays up to his armside. Change-up was 72-74 with good armspeed and fade. Slider was 69-70 with good armspeed and late hard 1/7 break, showed swing and miss potential buried away from lefties. Was around the zone with all three pitches, got squeezed a bit in his second inning of work. Did a good job of entering and minimizing damage. Came in with two on and no outs, fielded a bunt and got lead runner at third. Induced a pop up and strikeout, should have escaped without any inherited runners scoring but was hurt by a passed ball. Has some upside and the stuff has a chance to play as he fills out and adds velocity.
