Payne is 6-0 with an athletic frame that has some strength present and some projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a slightly open balanced athletic stance, leg kick stride on line, short load back to a slight wrap. Hips rotate completely with some violence and he maintains some lower half balance. Hands stay inside, quick to the ball, uphill swing path, some strength at contact with extension through the ball, showed good approach working gap to gap, power present in the gaps, swing generates natural loft, exit velocity was 86. In the infield, gets behind the ball and fields with a wider base and average hands, clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, position velocity was 82. On the mound, he throws from a three-quarters arm slot, shorter loose quick arm action and some effort to his delivery. Drop and drive delivery, shoulders are slightly uphill and closed, lands on line with a slight fall off finish. Fastball was 83-85, with a touch of cutting action to it. Curveball had some armspeed and was 69-72 with sharp 11/5 break to it. Slider had some armspeed and was 70-71 with hard 11/5 break to it.
