Young has the stuff and feel needed to become an impact arm at the next level despite pitching to mixed results (6-1, 7.80 ERA, 53 K in 47 1/3 IP) as a Midland freshman. The ball comes out of the 6-foot-2 Oklahoma State commit's hand with ease at 92-96 mph and gets on hitters quickly. He imparts good spin and some late action on his sharp, 11-to-5 curveball and also shows the makings of having a quality changeup.
JUCO Gems: Pitchers, Vol. 2
At 6-foot-3, 170 pounds, Young has a loose, live, athletic body with a fast arm. He features a 90-93 mph fastball that he throws with late tail and occasional sinking. Young commands his heater to both sides of the plate, consistently throwing quality fastballs in the zone. His 77-78 mph curveball has very good spin that gives it a tight, sharp, downer break. Many of the curves the Oklahoma State recruit threw were plus, and he also landed the pitch for a strike. Young has a good feel for turning over a changeup, throwing it with deceptive arm speed as well as tail and sink. Young repeats his delivery well and has the athleticism needed to develop plus command. I saw Young up to 96 mph during the fall, and given the arm speed on his curveball, it’s easy to envision him generating mid-90s velocity in the future. With his potential to command three future plus pitches, Young has the makings of a mid-rotation starter at the next level.
