4/20/19: The brother of 2018 first round pick Jordan Groshans (Blue Jays), Jaxx is an athletically built backstop who packs thump in a powerful righthanded stroke. In a Big 12 matchup against West Virginia last weekend, he impressed with his advanced offensive approach, going 6-for-13 on the series, including two of the Jayhawks three hits against red hot Mountaineer ace Alek Manoah. At the plate, Groshans has above average bat speed, feel for the strike zone and a penchant for barreling the baseball. He runs well for a catcher, producing average home-to-first run times. Behind the dish, Groshans moves well laterally to either side and displays a solid average arm, though his receiving skills need some additional refinement. While these skills indicate there is a chance that he can remain behind plate as a professional, ultimately his value is what he brings to the table offensively. He's athletic enough to handle an outfield corner spot as his bat propels him through pro ball. Regardless of the defensive outlook, the perceived safety in Groshans' bat paired with his track record of success over two summers in the Cape make him an appealing draft name early on day two. (Granger)
8/15/18: A six-foot, 210 pound junior catcher, we missed Groshans as our Cape coverage coincided with his and the KU baseball program’s trip to Taiwan for the World University Baseball Championships. Presently, he is considered a Day Two draft talent whose best tools are an above average arm and raw power. Slashed a solid .262/.367/.405 in 98 plate appearances this summer for the Firebirds building off a .313/.355/.464 spring season for the Jayhawks. (Seifert)
