6-foot, 155-pound two-time Future Gamer grades towards the top of his class in regards to pure arm strength. Lean, wiry frame with good athleticism and some projection. Quiet, delivery and controlled tempo with quick, whippy arm working up to 3/4 slot. The stuff hasn’t been an issue with Smith, who shows three pitches that dance and dart creating good separation, but harnessing the stuff has been Smith’s biggest obstacle. Lively, high-spin FB worked 85-90 (2026-2302 rpm per Trackman) with occasional arm side action. Heavy FB mix, but showed mid 70s CB and 78-82 mph CH. The breaking ball took a slight step back after looking like a 12/6 hammer early in his prep career, and developing into more SL action. Third offering is hard CH with slight fade and potential to develop to round out mix. Smith has the stuff to be a power 5 arm, but needs to take the next step in commanding the zone and showing more consistency from outing to outing. He's made small steps in 2020, and once it clicks, he should be an exciting prospect to watch.
