2020 committed to FIU, 5-foot-8, 156 pound shortstop. Short stride at the plate. Quick hands. Uphill swing. Quick transfers defensively. Above average arm. Showed off his glove making a couple nice plays during the showcase.
Treat to watch on defense with his quick, easy hands. During infield/outfield, he likes to wind up to show off his arm strength, which is clearly above average or better. He made an impressive play at second base in the last inning, ranging to his glove side and spinning to start a double play turn. He had a base hit in two at-bats. There is some length to his swing, but it’s a quick bat and he takes a line drive path.
At the 2019 UA All-American Game, Ondina was exhilarating to watch on defense, especially at second base. He's an energetic table-setter on offense with fast feet out of the box and on the basepaths – he stole second and third in a crucial moment in the seventh frame. Ondina swings a quick right-handed bat geared for low-lying, spray contact. His long-term value is likely tied to his glove and range, where he's able to pick grounders in athletic stride, allowing him to position himself in a way to make strong, accurate throws all in one fluid motion. His arm strength is plenty big enough to cover the shortstop role, too.
