The athlete's maximum throwing velocity from an infield position in the given event year. Measured in miles per hour (MPH).
79.0
Power / Speed Score
A simple calculation that divides the athlete’s Exit Velocity Max by the athlete’s 60 Yard Dash time for the given event year. For example, 98 MPH / 7.00s = 14.00.
A fastball with hop has a flat approach angle and visually jumps through the zone. When thrown up in the zone, it is more likely to generate a higher swing and miss average. Hop+ of 100 is MLB average.
Fastball
Sink+
A fastball with sink has low backspin and drops through the strike zone. When thrown down in the zone, it is more likely to generate a higher ground ball percentage and lower launch angle. Sink+ of 100 is MLB average.
Fastball
Rise+
A fastball with rise has a high percentage of backspin. When thrown up in the zone, it is more likely to generate a higher fly ball percentage. Rise+ of 100 is MLB average
Curveball
Hammer+
A hammer breaking ball drops vertically with velocity through the zone, or 12-to-6 movement. Hammer+ of 100 is MLB average.
Curveball
Sweep+
A sweeping breaking ball moves horizontally with velocity through the zone. Sweep+ of 100 is MLB average.
Physical: Showcased a lean and athletic 6-foot, 180-pound frame with improved strength in the build. 7.39 runner in the 60-yard dash.
Offensively: RHH. Compact, balanced stance with the hangs working in rhythm at the shoulder. Utilized a short and quick leg lift stride towards the pitcher with slight stoppage of the movement in the hands for the load mechanism in order to initiate his swing. Showcased a pull-side approach during batting practice with a strong top hand and lift after impact allowing for occasional lift and backspin on ball flight. The lower half hits into a stiff front side while registering an 85 mph bat-exit velocity per Trackman Baseball.
Defensively: The primary shortstop played with a low center of gravity and quick movements in the feet allowing for range to either side and a soft glove hand that worked with ease out in front of the body. Fielded the ball off the left side of his body with a double tap at the break point for rhythm after funneling into the stomach area. Featured an accurate throwing arm across the diamond out of a high ¾ slot, arm strength should keep him on the right side of the infield at the moment. SS - 78 mph.
Pitching: Up tempo pace on the bump with a slight front side leg lean causing for plenty of work in the arm at release through a quick, high ¾ slot. Fastball played 81-83 mph in the zone with a high of 2057 spin per Trackman Baseball. Mixed in feel for spin and 2277 spin on a 72-74 mph CB displaying 11/5 shape and countered with a 70-72 mph CH with enough velocity differential to keep hitters off balance.
2/29/20
Showed off a lean and athletic 6-foot, 165-pound frame with room to add strength as he matures. The right-handed hitter begins with a wide, slightly open stance utilizing a leg-hang stride to initiate a slightly uphill barrel path into the hitting zone. Demonstrated a line drive approach during batting practice with ability to lift to the pull side when contacting the ball out in front. Hit into a stiff front-side while recording an 81 mph bat-exit velocity and ran a 7.25 60-yard dash. The primary shortstop featured fluidity in the movements while arriving to the ball on time with active feet. Played through the ball with ease allowing for an accurate 79 mph arm-strength out of a ¾ arm-slow with room for more. The right-handed pitcher sat 77-79 mph out of a fluid, high ¾ arm-slot using an up-tempo delivery with athleticism in the arm swing. Mixed in a 67-70 mph curveball showing 11/5 shape in the zone and countered with a 68-70 mph changeup thrown with adequate sell.
1/14/18
Defensively, long frame on left-handed thrower plays well around the bag at first base. Hands are adequate. Throwing motion is long.
Offensively, swing is initiated from open set up with knee to knee leg kick and stride to neutral. There is subtle top half lunge over a stiff front leg creating compromised hip turn and a steep bat path. Benefit would be gained from land softer on front leg, avoiding top half drift and rotataing around a firm front side.
On the mound, Smith works out of over the top arm slot showing ability to repeat his delivery. Length of frame and arm slot create downward plane with deception. FB at 71 -73 was commanded while lacking movement. CB at 61-63 mph varied in shape from 12-6 to 1-7 while dispalying late, sharp break and moderate depth. CH at 61-63 mph was thrown with good sell and consistent rm side fade. Overall presentation, pending expected velocity gains, make Smith an interesting follow in this class.
