Physical: Tall RHP at 6-foot-4, 192LBS. Very projectable build that is already developing some strength. Penn State Commit.
Pitching: RHP. Starts on the 1B side of the mound. Large rocker step followed by a leg lift to chest height. Leg works down and out in a straight line down the mound. Hands motion down and up around chest height during the leg lift process. Arm stabs down and back slightly following glove break. Arm works forward in a whippy manner on the FB, arm slows down on off speed. FB sat 91-92MPH, topping 93MPH. Has a chance to be an overpowering FB at the next level.
2/23/20
6-foot-4, 190-pound right-handed pitcher has added five inches and 35 pounds to his frame in the past two years. With that has aslo come dramatic velocity increases. On this date he sat 90-92 from an over-the-top arm slot beginning with a sizable side-rocker step. While the step is deliberate it does create some issues in repeating his delivery. Also displayed a curveball at 70-75 with tight 11/5 rotation and good depth. Showed difficulties commanding the pitch for strikes, but showed signs of it being an out pitch with refinement. Changeup at 74-75 was thrown at near fastball arm-speed with little movement. Very quick arm action and athletic frame is intriguing. A move to a slightly lower arm slot that will allow for greater movement on his pitches is likely in the future.
6/18/19
6-foot-3, 180-pound primary pitcher sat 83-85 from a high 3/4 arm slot with a short takeaway. Repeats delivery well and stays linear to the plate. Curveball at 63-66 showed 11/5 rotation and changeup at 66-69 is thrown with good arm speed giving Renner a trio of solid pitches to work with. Projectable frame has a chance to fill out considerably and combined with the lengthening of his arm action could lead to additional velocity spike in the coming years.
2/16/19
6-foot-3, 180-pound righty sat 83-86 from a high 3/4 arm slot with a balanced, repeatable deliver with some hip coil action. Curveball showed tight 11/5 rotation with two-plane break at 66-68. Changeup was thrown at near fastball arm speed at 67-68. Projectable frame with room to add strength. Renner continues to be a pitcher that will draw considerable interest in this class.
7/10/18
6-foot-1, 165-pounder sat 82-84 from a 3/4 arm slot with some arm-side run to his fastball. Showed solid balance and repeatable mechanics beginning with a side rocker step while incorporating some hip coil in his stack. Has added nearly 10 mph to his fastball since we saw him last in lat December. Also showcased a curveball with 10/4 rotation at 64-66. There is a hook in the back that telegraphs the pitch. Renner's changeup shows both sink and arm-side run at fastball arm speed sitting 69-72. An athletic frame should carry additional weight and strength leading to additional velocity gains in the coming years. It will be interesting to follow Renner's progression over the next 12 months to see if he continues to progress as much he has in the past six months.
12/30/17
5-foot-11, 155-pound right-hander sat 73-75 from a high 3/4 arm slot with a hook in the back. Fastball is relatively straight, but hip coil in the delivery adds to some deception. Curveball showed tight rotation with 11/5 break at 57-60 and changeup is thrown at near fastball arm speed at 56-59.
