2/29/24
Benge is a plus athlete who can run, throw, defend and shows above average raw power in batting practice. On this look his left handed bat is a work-in-progress. He consistently got beat inside over the weekend, and especially during the opener against Michigan. He was never able to get to his above average raw power (112 max EV last season) and finished the three game set 1-for-14. Presently, it’s a slower trigger with some length to the path that should naturally improve with strength/weight gains as he fills out in his 6-foot-2, 185-pound frame. As an added bonus, Benge took to the mound to finish Friday’s game against Michigan. Entering this contest, he did not have a strong history of throwing strikes (26 walks in 35 innings), but on this night he filled the zone, retiring all three hitters he faced, two via strikeout while throwing just 11 pitches. Showing a loose and quick arm, his sinking/tailing fastball peaked at 93 and was complemented by an above average 78 mph curve.
8/01/23

Cape CodOne of the most exciting two-way talents in college baseball, Benge missed all of 2022 while recovering from Tommy John surgery, then returned to action and logged 35 innings off the mound while hitting .343/.466/.535 with seven homers and 17 doubles in 249 at-bats as a redshirt freshman this spring. He suffered a deep bruise in his quad after running into a wall in the final week of the spring, so he was never fully healthy this summer in Chatham, but he still made a very strong impression in eight games, hitting .345 in 29 at-bats. A live athlete at 6-foot-2, 190 pounds, Benge can really run when he’s at full strength, and he has a chance to play center field as his career unfolds, but his double-plus arm also plays well in right. Benge has serious bat speed from the left side, and he’s still scratching the surface of his power potential. He profiles as a true speed/power threat with game-changing upside as a defender in center field, in the mold of Steve Finley. He also has legitimate pro ability as a pitcher, but we’ll save that report for another day.

6-foot-2, 170-pound slim frame with a ton of room to add size and strength. At the plate, Benge showed his power ability with an exit velocity of 95 mph. Began in an open stance with a big load, then used a small leg kick to initiate his swing. Bat speed is elite, exhibits rotational swing plane and a back foot finish. Barreled up multiple balls with loud contact. Up the middle approach. High end defender, showed his live arm in the infield with position velocities up to 89 mph; has sure hands, athletic feet and a clean exchange. Showed consistent accuracy to the bag with a high ¾ slot. Recorded a 60 time of 7.07 at the event. Showed an over-the-top arm angle and a consistent arm action with good arm speed. Shows feel on the mound and uses some effort. Has strong balance point and uphill shoulders. Lands square with an athletic finish. Fastball showed a straight movement. Shows a 12/6 curveball with tight action. Other times the breaking ball takes on 11/5 shape and wipe out slider type action.

2/02/20

Showcased advanced athleticism in a projectable 6-foot-2, 165-pound frame with room to add strength onto a lean frame with quick actions. The left-handed hitter begins from a tall, open stance utilizing a leg-kick with advanced sink into the lower half to initiate his swing. Displayed a violent, repeatable swing with noticeable bat speed through a slightly uphill path in the hitting zone. Registered a 91 mph bat-exit velocity while hitting into a stiff front side and ran a 7.09 60-yard dash. The primary third baseman demonstrated long, athletic actions during defensive evaluations with a low center of gravity yielding hands that played through the ball with regularity. Showed off solid footwork that allowed for momentum to be created towards the target consistently while changing direction well, flashing range to both sides. Soft hands and easy transfers generated an accurate 83 mph arm-strength across the diamond from a repeatable, high ¾ arm-slot.

7/16/19

Demonstrated feel for a projectable 6-foot-2, 160-pound frame with fluid actions and lean strength. The left-handed hitter begins from a balanced, open stance utilizing rhythmic hand movement and a leg-kick to initiate his swing. Showcased an easy, fluid swing with present barrel whip through a flat barrel path. Displayed advanced barrel awareness yielding an impressive 88 mph bat-exit velocity. Recorded a 7.25 60-yard dash. The primary third baseman generated smooth, athletic actions during defensive evaluations with feet that arrived on time consistently. Played low to the ground with easy transfers and accurate 83 mph arm-strength across the diamond from a repeatable, high ¾ arm-slot.
