Cape Cod: Coming off a freshman season in which he had a 4.15 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 30.1 innings as Ohio State’s primary closer, Beidelschies opened eyes even wider with his performance over the summer. He had a 3.62 ERA and a 31-to-8 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 22.1 innings. From a three-quarters release, which creates a bit of a crossfire effect for righthanded batters, Beidelschies has a firm fastball at 91-93 mph, touching as high as 95 mph this summer, but he also leans heavily on a pair of secondary pitches, a slider and a changeup that both sit in the low-to-mid 80s. The lefty’s strike-throwing over the summer was a revelation, as a rate of 6.2 walks per nine innings in the spring dropped to 3.2 per nine innings over the summer. How much of that was a progression in his skills versus the lack of fear of hard contact with wood bats will have a lot to do with how he performs in 2024.
