Scannell stands in at 6-foot; 220 pounds with a powerful frame. Thick and athletic body with opportunity to develop and become stronger moving into senior year. Offensively-Straight up approach with hands in front of back shoulder. On pitch trigger is a small step forward with a toe tap and hands moving back behind shoulder in a good hitting position. Displayed an exit velocity of 90 mph which is a 7 mph improvement from Preseason All-State showcase in February. Can drive the gaps;line drive stroke. Defensively-Good footwork and approach. Moves well for a big strong athlete. Good arm swing getting into a throwing position. Moves well around the bag at first. Could improve footwork on picks coming from throws across diamond. Displayed a position velocity of 75 mph.
Preseason All-State (Feb. 28, 2016)
Scannel stands 6-foot, 220-pounds with a solid football player style frame. With a thick lower half and a physical build he should see some good progress through the spring. Offensively- Sets up outside shoulder width and uses a small stride forward. Creates good separation up top and stayed compact through the zone. The swing almost looked effortless and seems to have more in the tank. Exit velocity was only at 82-mph this day but the ball was definitely jumping off his bat during live BP. Defensively- Zach moved real well for a big man and showed quick smooth arm action at first base. His solid frame and power potential at the plate make him a very intriguing player to watch this spring and summer as he could certainly put some fear into a pitcher.
